How dry does birdseed need to be?
    #19328490 - 12/26/13 11:43 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

I'm currently following TranscendingLife's bird seed tek, Soaked for 20 hours and boiled. I don't have a big strainer, so the bird seed is sitting in one of those big aluminum pans in front of my fan.

how dry do they need to be before I load them into jars? Tek says the exterior should be dry does but does this mean they should be like cracker dry?

They need to be dry to the touch, put them on a piece of toilet paper for 15 sec and see if it leaves a water mark. If so it is still to wet. Before I got my new supplies I used a window screen and wbs took about 5 hours to dry.. Rye only takes about 40 min if you simmer

No, just dry enough to where you can pick a spoonful of it up and pour it out without sticking to the spoon. If a few stick it's fine though. I haven't grown in a real long time but that's how I always did it and it worked everytime.

If you boiled/simmered the grains it is recommended to let them dry on the outside completely before loading the jars.

I do not boil/simmer my WBS, I just soak for 24 hours in hot tap water, strain for 20 minutes and load my jars while they are still a tad moist on the outside.

The excess moisture gets absorbed into the grains during the PC cycle/cooldown, and the next day they roll around in the jars like dry BBs.

I do some pretty damn big batches of grain when I do them. I couldn't possibly fit all mine in a strainer.

I soak/simmer/drain my WBS then spread it out on a towel with a fan blowing on it. Toss it every 10-20 minutes for an hour, maybe 90 minutes if you've got a lot and you're good to go.

So I just spread the seed out in front of a fan for 60 minutes.

just loaded my jars in the PC to cook at 10 PSI for 60 minutes(10 is the highest my PC goes) seed was still a little bit wet, but didn't clump or stick at all.
will it still work even though the exterior wasn't completely dry?

okay, it's still in the PC so i'll just let it go a little longer.
How long should I do PF cakes at 10 PSI?

so im good to go? it'll work even though they're still kinda wet?
also, should I shake the jar after knocking with spore solution?

60 minutes would be fine for cakes still i would think but maybe longer to be safe, don't shake after you inoculate you want your spores to find eachother

60 minutes at 10 PSI would work for cakes, since 90 minutes at ~1 PSI works.

For your grain, definitely do at least 2 hours if you're only getting 10 PSI. I'd probably do 2.5 hours to be safe.

YOU prep your seed however you can make it work. You may try the way I do it with a towel and a fan though. Like I said, 60-90 minutes or so works. You still have to eyeball it though. In a pinch, I've taken a second towel and just basically gently rubbed my grain dry.

It works for me, but some people don't like it. I will warn that it's pretty messy though, so do it on some tile or linoleum so it'll be easy to sweep up.

My seed is fairly wet before PC'ing the way I do it. Any excess moisture is gone within a day or two and I have no issues.

You should add this into your writeup. I couldn't get a decent yield for shit out of your TEK, and this might be why. I thoroughly dried my grain before PCing. That little extra water probably gets absorbed while PCing/sitting for a day or 2.
