When did you realize the fact that someday you will cease to be?
    #19328586 - 12/26/13 12:12 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

As a child and even in my later youth, I really thought I'd never die

The idea never dawned on me until these past couple years with the introduction of psychedelics, DA and the misc philosophy that interests me.
...I musta thought I was quite special.

The topic of death is quite fascinating to me because it seems so real.
The only thing that seems to be more real is the fact we seem to be living beings.

So when did you realize someday you won't be? (In this form at least)

Maybe I never even was. No more me seems fine in every sense. Life, death, sex, smoking a tomahawk pipe, or washing my armpits in a taco bell bathroom. Did I do all that? Well fuck what for? Zombie apocalypse looks like the adulterer that broke jail in old Sodom and Gommorah. Maybe it never was. Maybe I've got a strong suspicion that I'm not the man that was advertised, never was. "Who's there?" I don't know. Jonah in the belly of a whale? Thats an honest man, running away, running from life and running from death, a fugitive. The doors of convict cells are never locked from without but from within, or are they?

I still don't really believe that I'll die one day.

Honestly.

Same.

It's not something I think about at all or wish to think about. The thought scared me when I was really young, but since then I stopped fearing the inevitable and I'm in this mindset where I feel like I'm not going to face death. I still feel like I'm going to live forever at times.

The thought also comes up briefly during/after a near death experience, but I don't have those quite often. My mind is too occupied on other things to ponder about it really.

Something similar has crossed my mind. :satansmoking:

For most of my life I didn't really believe in death for myself.  Now that I have serious health issues that belief is starting to erode.

Where do you think this concept of immortality arose from, for you?

For my generation I suspect video games, cartoons, and intellectually stunted parents

It arose from DA imo. My mind effectively shut out the knowledge of my impermanence using cultural beliefs and it's doings.  It worked great for awhile.

I cease to be every moment, dead from my expression and born anew.

Or awareness and clarity........

People may choose to deny their heritage but the physical world at some point becomes undenyable to the observer. Unless you get hit by a bus or something, get snuffed out early.

Injury, illness and age will make the physical world undenyable. You can  choose to observe it now, however.

*** edit I'm sorry I thought this was aimed at icelander's comment for some reason, but I see i'm mistaken. I agree, much denialism is fear based.

Maybe.

Or hope for a better future.  A future without old age, or death.  A future that with the advent of biotechnology and science, we can quite possibly achieve.

In other words, immortality is at our fingertips.  And it's our choice whether we let fear/superstition/religion hold us back from reaching out and grabbing it.  :sun:

OK, so why don't you choose to be immortal then? When you say "our" what do you mean? I do not know how to choose immortality.

This sounds like rhetoric grounded in fear. Why not embrace the fact you are going to die? Use this knowledge to inform how you are going to live your limited life. Don't fuck around with pseudo scientific hope, because it's a hard drug that when abused, will keep you from using your time wisely.

"Pseudo scientific hope"?

Maybe I'm overly optimistic, but already we've discovered that old age is caused by shortening telomeres.  I see old age as nothing more than a defect in our genetic machinery, that given enough time and enough brain power, can be overcome.

If you feel otherwise, please elaborate.  Maybe it won't happen in my lifetime, but if you see any impossibility in the eventual advancement of medical science in so far as to cure aging, I'd be interested in hearing it.

What do you mean by we? What studies have you been involved with?

Are you an expert on genetics or telomeres? Here is a recent articles talking about telomere studies from UCSF. It appears they are suggesting that telomeres are lengthenend from being healthy. ARTICLE

You are suggesting that somehow "genetically" we can lengthen someones telomeres to make them healthy. This is confusing correlation and causation. The cause of lengthened telomeres is being attentive to your health, and this is nothing new. We've known for a long time about the effects of diet sleep etc. have on aging.

There are a lot of futurists that say a lot of things. That doesn't ground these things in reality or make then tangible, accessible to me or the people around me. The bridge between science fiction and reality grows, but I've seen nothing but hype and rhetoric regarding ever lasting life. "Future-ism" predominately uses "ism" in the dogmatic sense.

The notion that you can cure aging is a fallacious. Aging isn't something that needs curing. It isn't a disease. It isn't a parasite. It is not a problem. It's your body working properly. If you want to avoid having a rough time with aging, be attentive to your sleep, diet, space concerns, exercise, and knowledge, among other things. Start this attentive process as soon as possible.

Death is your ace in the hole laddie. :satansmoking:

Of course I understand it having gone through it.  There is a dream, a dream that we can undo or do over the mistakes of our youth but it's not to be imo.  Would open up a whole new slew of issues most likely anyway.
