dentist and insurance question
    #19327949 - 12/26/13 08:25 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

I always went to the dentist every six months until a little over 2 years ago when I lost my dental insurance. I haven't taken the best care of my teeth in recent years. I only brush my teeth once a day but could do a better job and rarely floss. I have been smoking cigarettes off and on for a few years.

I will be going to the dentist as soon as possible because I had a filling fall out about a year ago(have been broke and kept putting it off), and a couple days ago a big piece of a tooth chipped off when I was using a tooth pick. This is a huge wake up call that I need to take better care of my mouth. I quit smoking the next day and am now on the patches. Also I have started changing my diet, no coffee and less sugary foods and such.

I am sure the dentist will notice I smoked. A friend of mine says if I tell the dentist I smoke he will tell my insurance. I don't have dental insurance but would the dentist notify my medical insurance?

I dont know where you are located but here in Cali, every doctor I've been to asks if I smoke and then quickly adds cigarettes to the end. I think you should be fine, if the dentist asks if you smoke just say no and they won't record it. Simple as that.

So many factors affect insurance, it's honestly all pretty vague.

I remember I was tested for std's in college and that kicked my insurance up a good 40 bucks because I was "high risk"

I really can't speak as to what will affect your insurance, I always thought dental insurance was totally separate from medical insurance but im sure it depends on your provider among other factors.

As for cavities and dental hygiene advice from a fellow coffee drinker. I had 8 cavities before I realized I had to rinse my mouth out or brush my teeth after drinking coffee. It will simply rot your teeth out if you don't
