Just finished Siddhartha by Hesse today - single best book I've ever read. I'm looking for a book equally thought provoking. I've got other Hesse books on the waiting list but I like to give authors breaks as to not sour its content. If somebody could give me a few recommendations I'd really appreciate it

A man struggles on the inside and looks for external remedies to heal internal curiousity/woes. He goes from lifestyle to lifestyle before quickly realizing (unlike his friend Govinda) that he's doing it all wrong. He basically realizes that wisdom/peace he's seeking cannot be taught - that he must find it himself rather than listen to teachings. There's a whole lot more to it and I REALLY strongly encourage you to read it. Its roots are in Buddhism/Hinduism but in a bigger picture it applies to everything.

If you're interested in the philosophy of religion then Aldous Huxley's Perennial Philosophy might interest you

Shit, that sounds pretty good. I can dig Buddhism/Hinduism stuff. I wish I had some recommendations for you in that department, but the only thing I can think of is some Alan Watts stuff and I have a feeling you've probably already read them.

I haven't read Watts, it depends on his take on it all. One would imagine Siddhartha is a religious book before reading, but it's far more to do with steering clear of a doctrine/religion than to find religion. It's a self-liberating book, sure it has a couple Oms tossed in throughout but that's not its point.

I read that a few years back. atthe time I was in a depression which didn't seem likely to subside, it strengthened my spiritual/meditative self to become more aware of my place in life. I can scarcely recall alot of it being so long ago, but I remember the main aspects/changes involved. By the end of the book you feel as if you went on a spiritual trip & actually sat in a circle with the Buddha and had a session to muse upon the dream.
I think the most valuable lesson of this book is that we can't follow something believing it might fulfill/relieve us in a way we couldn't ourselves... It basically reveals that to put your faith into any sort of cult like religions/philosophy is positively absurd...Its kind of similar to conformism. We each are born in this world without a voice or identity, but we see countless logos, "groups", & fashions that take ahold of us, and at times we don't see that simply by accepting these so readily we end up losing ourselves more. Our identity becomes that of something created by other people, soyou aren't responsible for your customization but someone else...
As long as we find our own inner light that can guide us through life, a sort of intuitive guide that enables us to see things easier/clearer then we should accomplish whatever goals we have set our minds too.
I would recommend A Handful of Dust or Zeno's Conscience they are both very well written. I'm uncertain which one Id put first since they are both cherished by me. If you are looking forsomething on the Siddharta side then I'd tell you to pick up Ishmael.

I always suggest "Into The Wild" by Jon Krakauer when a book thread comes up in the shroomery. One of my favorite books ever based on a true story about travel/adventure and finding out what really is important to you in life.
If you've already read that, I'm about to start reading "Paddle Your Own Canoe: One Man's Fundamentals for Delicious Living" by Nick Offerman. I've heard mixed reviews, but the summaries I've read sound like it's a perfect book for people that enjoy the outdoors, red meat, and other manly things lol.
Happy reading.
Edit: I have into the wild saved as a .PDF file. If you'd like a copy for free me.

Into The Wild was the book I read before Siddhartha actually. Awesome and inspiring read. I decided to start on Cat's Cradle by Vonnegut since it has been sitting next to me for a while.. I'll keep all of the recommendations in mind for after the book though (which won't be long, it's fucking winter break and my hometown is boring so all I do is read)

Cat's Cradle is my second favorite by Vonnegut after The Sirens of Titan. Maybe check out Bukowski or Tom Wolfe if you're digging the narrative form.

I think Mother Night was my favorite Vonnegut book...
If fiction is your thing then I suggest anything by Neil Gaiman
And Tom Robbins, particularly: Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates, Jitter Bug Perfume, and Another Roadside Attraction
Also, nearly evderybody I know raves about the book Ishmeal by Daniel Quinn. I thought it was alright, but I didn't think it was as spactacular as everybody made it sound.

OZA, I really suggest Devil In the Flesh if you've been in love. You're only like 19 or something, right? I read that book when I was 19 and it captures 1st love perfectly. The joy, the pain, everything..... It's also fairly short, you could probably read it in a day.

Godel Escher Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid by Douglass Hoffstadder (sp?)
Based in the spirit of Lewis Caroll (from Alice in Wonderland)

Quite a read, but WELL worth it. His follow up "I am a strange loop" is amazing as well.

Bhuddism is a crock of shit.
"Follow me, I can show you the way for I have transcended!" Right...
I like the Grimm stories...I prefer fantasy books. Philosophical wandering a I tend to do in my day to day life rather than read stories about others experiences although they can be interesting.
