I didn't vote for Bush, I didn't vote against Bush, but I did vote.

I voted for him in Texas, and I think rich boys that don't vote have nothing to complain about.

yeah, well he did increase the value of my daddy's oil stocks so he could buy that extra condo in Florida...

but he's also gonna cut my pell grant in half, which means mo' debt for me!

Oh yeah, and I'm the only "rich boy" with the scruples to complain. I've seen the belly of the beast and it aint pretty.

If I had fewer morals I would just sit back and enjoy the fact that the inheritance tax has been eliminated

I would just sit back and enjoy how easy it was for me to waltz into the most prestigious universities in my city.

I would just sit back and enjoy all the operational advantages my father's wealth and influence have given me.

But I have friends who struggle, and they are just as good, if not better people than me. I feel as if I have been given these priveleges for a purpose, and that purpose is to stand up for those who were born with nothing.

I dare anyone else in my position to do the same.

I had it all... I rejected it.

I would rather work hard and have nothing than have everything and not lift a fucking finger, like so many other yuppie larvae I went to High School with.

You mean like the ones he was reading to on the morning of 9/11 when he should've been protecting our country?

I'm just rattling your chain man. The inheritance tax makes 100% sense though, you must admit. If your parents already paid outrageous taxes on the money, why should you have to pay it again?

People pay double taxes all the time. Sales taxes, for instance, are taxed on your already-taxed income. Then there's fees on things like your driver's license, fishing license, hunting license, etc. Then there's import taxes, excise taxes, bridge tolls, car registration, taxes on alcohol, gasoline, and tobacco, and property taxes.

With the repeal of the estate tax, however, the rich can avoid not only double taxation, but single taxation. You buy an enourmous stock or property, let it accumulate value, and die. Your kids get the money, and escape both estate and capital gains taxes.

Why is it always about the 'rich' with you guys? This effects everyone equally. When my parents die we will most likely sell their house and split up the money. It ain't going to be much and they are hardly rich. Taxing income twice is not the same thing as taxing products, besides most product taxes are not charged by the feds anyway. Most sales taxes are state and local taxes.

yeah sorry, I'm real hyper sensitive about my silver spoon origins, especially since I'm a poor, dirty hippie.

but honestly I would have no objections to paying taxes on money I havent earned unless I knew it was going towards things I dont approve of, like military spending.  I've already told my father he can give my inheritance to greenpeace or the libertarian party for all I care.  I dont want money that I didnt earn: it will only corrupt me and distract me from my purpose here on earth.

yeah my dad pays outrageous taxes but thats why he told me to stick the government for every penny I could, financial aid wise

Actually, from what I've read, family farms, small businesses, and other estates up to $8,000,000 were exempt from the estate tax. So ya, it is about the rich.

Give it to me then. I would have no problem spending it, and have no worried about being corrupted by money. I would just spend it on stuff.

And? That doesn't mean your average Joe's inheritance is going to be taxed. Why do you think that 'rich' people shouldn't be given the same breaks as everyone else? Jealousy?

Actually it has less to do with jealousy than stability. Personally, I come from a rather well-to-do family. My parents are among the group that benefited the most from Bush's tax cuts, yet they opposed them. It has do with the growing gap between rich and poor. Such a gap is not healthy for the country.
