Cakes vs Casing, what better,
    #19323125 - 12/24/13 08:37 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Sorry for all the questions folks, but this place is so helpful that I love doing research and investigating more and more.

As some of you know, I have 9 cakes right now that have been fruiting. I am on the first flush and I got some bluish, so based on the advice here, the lid is less cracked and I am misting more.

I see many photos here that look like a foil tray. That is casing I believe it is? For some reason, It rings my bell and I wanna try it too, some folks say it is better.

I still have three jars consolidating (they were slower to colonize, and I have no rush) so I am planning to try to put it on a try instead of cakes (tell me if I said something wrong, lol.)

Is it better that way? How shall I proceed? I guess that when the 3 jars are ready, I just remove them from the jars, dunk for 24h and then.... just break down the cakes, mix with vermiculite and then spread it on the tray? If so, where does the perlite goes? And how much more verm should I add, if any?

If I am all wrong, then how should it be done for casing? (or to make one of those foil trays, it appears that a ton more shrooms grow that way)

Thanks a lot folks! :hippie:

we call them bulk subs, casing layers are diffrent, spawn your cakes to a bulk sub or fruit as is,  your cakes alread 2/3's verm as is so don't spawn to verm it's pointless get manure or coir or straw or all of it(you can use verm with those lol)
merry x-mas

Ah okay!

So with the three jars I have remaining, I just break the cakes, mix it with manure and just "spread" on a foil tray? Any proportion for manure/jar mix?

It is also possible after dunking, just breaking down the cakes and putting them on a foil tray?

Merry x-mas for you all

no need to dunk the cakes but you certainly can just make sure you rinse well after, i would say you can do maybe a qt's worth of bulk sub with 3 cakes. just pasturize your bulk properly and use a cheese grater to break your cakes down and get as many innoc points as possible. and theres no benifit to simply crumbling cakes yield wise you wanna add something to it or just fruit as is

i think this one was about 4 or maybe 5 cakes so youmay want something smaller

Don't use foil trays! You need to pasteurize that manure and bring it to field capacity!
Also I would work on getting the cakes right before you move on to bulk. Bulk is not harder just a little more costly especially when its messed up. either way It sounds like you have a lot more research to do, The search function is a wonderful thing!

Yeah any plastic tray will work just make sure your spawn to sub ratio is no less than 1:6 and shoot for a thickness of about 3-5 inches

i've never needed to go that deep with small trays:shrug:or had to go over1:4 there s not much for grain in cakes
not saying it will hurt anything but all those are just over 2 inches

nothing wrong with jumping head first in to bulk. it's not that costly, I get 3 bricks of coir for $7 and plastic trays cost fuck all. iv had great results with bulk and iv never made a PF cake in my life.

I completely agree! I also have never made a PF cake and didn't have a problem starting with bulk. But you like me probably didn't have a problem using the search engine to find the answers to our questions..

Also cronicr I'm not saying 2 inches or even less wont work just fine but IME the thicker the tray the bigger the yeild.

Like I said though I've never made a cake I jumped straight into grains and bulk, so OP I may be way off lol. I don't know from experience about colonization times or ratios for brf cakes spawned to bulk.. I do know from experience that anywhere from 1.5-6 inches and ratios from 1:1-1:10 have proved successful in my own grain grows

I spawned my first cake to bulk just to see what would happen. I ended up with about 6 g's dry on the first flush. I did 3 cakes in another dish and have a much larger pinset on it. I have cakes next to the tray that are exploding with clusters of primordia. I think both have their advantages.

ya the search engine is a great thing, just be mindful of the date when things were posted. some info is a bit out dated.

I find a ratio of 1:2 or 1:3 works quite well with grain to coir. not sure about cakes. my sub depth is around 3.5" im considering going a bit thinner.

I use 12 qt trays in my green houses, 3 inch trays give me 2.5 oz dry 5 inch trays give me about 4 oz dry.. If I can get nearly double the yeild by adding 1 more jar of spawn to the same amount of greenhouse real estate then that seems like an okay sacrifice to me.. usually have an abundance of grain jars anyways haha.  but yeah 1:3 ratio I find is both decently fast at colonizing and plenty of nutrition
