i life is as a grocery store, then, there are those who go with a shopping list; milk, eggs, butter, veggies, fruits and grains. there are those who go looking for deals; on sale, new. some go to get coffee and see the scene. the ones knowing what the want will get wait desired. maybe, the milk is 2% not the whole wanted, or the eggs are from another farm. yet, still fulfill the order. those going for sales may find there favorite item at discount, or may settle for low price of non-likening. if not know what go for, some good surprises may arise, or may leave empty handed, yet a pocket full of cash. possibilities are endless. for the most part, eye have seen the one through school with debt in degree not using and working next to myself. others, PhD and on the crest of the wave. all depends how YOU work it, or else be worked. a fine balance between the two be a groovy thing to do.
what is it you want from an edge.mu.a.cation?

it depends on what you do with your time at college. picking a career in a high-demand industry will help you when getting out. applying yourself to your coursework will help you when you get out. participating in internships (even the unpaid ones, if thats all you can get at first, as you have no relevant work experience at that point) will help you when getting out. networking among your faculty will help you when getting out.
staying home from class because you dont want to wake up the nasty wench you brought home last night will not help you when you get out. spending four years in a stoned haze will not help you when you get out. becoming a philosophy major will not help you when you get out.
things like that

I'd say that unless you strike entrepreneurial gold or win the lottery, yes. It probably is.

The debate about the effectiveness of college is almost comparable to religious debates, they lead nowhere - only in circles.
If you ask me, college is what you make it. What do you want? A job? Or do you actually want to study under learned doctors to whom knowledge has been handed down to since the history of humanity. Essentially they are providers of a vast amount of information. You can find this information anywhere but studying under a doctor is extremely valuable. Moreover, if you care about your major you will probably find a job. If you are just scraping by in college then you will probably find yourself at a fast food joint.
Me? I have jumped around a lot in life but I have always been learning. I want to finish my second bachelors, earn a masters, and then a Ph.D. and then I want to read more and work somewhere meager. I want to spend most of my time in the woods and in the rivers.
To me psychology and sociology has been a mind expanding experience.

If I was to go back to school (which ironically i am but not for this) I would focus undergrad in medical field. Even if its cumbersome it still is edge of experience in a way. Pretty interesting biology and chemistry if u look at it right way. Classes can be hard but if you apply yourself you might succeed. Lots of opportunities when you get out. Or just go education get job as teacher is a pretty easy route.
I did psychology and it was cool but im still trying to figure out what I want to do. Im going back for my MA in special ed, im not exactly sure why. Just be up front with yourself as soon as possible. ANd open to trying things for yourself to see what feels right.

I recommend product development, with launch using crowd-funding. Requires some start-up money, but not much.

well the problem for me is the programs are designed to purposely try to do everything to make you fail. if you pass that means you re a good lab rat and they can continue stuffing information int your head.
i am from a different country and i can clearly tell the difference in how the information is presented
these fn schools are not made to make you understand the topic they are made to make you memorize whole bunch of shit and spit it back out during an exam... i remember (and understand) more from my early education then from a year and a half of college i got here in US.
i just cant stand that crap how its all set up
theres no denying that todays education is not for education but for profit. and its profitable to keep people in school longer and like a crack house keep them coming back for more every year
i know the benefits of education but its just stresses me the f out. just thinking about taking a class ive been short of breath for a week already i hate school but i know i need it and its a conflict.

he's basically saying start a company. i.e. entrepreneurship
Personally? If you're going to attend college the only degree's worth pursuing as far as ROI are the sciences, the practical ones. Medicine, engineering, etc. Trade schools are also wonderful, there are currently 3.2 million vocational positions that need filled in America. Welding is a great field, if you want to move to some more unsavory climates and get the right certs then you can make 70+ an hour ($100 an hour is not uncommon in Alaska for pipe welders). Entrepreneurship is also a great road to success if that is something your inclined towards, especially the tech industry. Currently i'm working for a small software consultancy in California and i'm making $15 an hour. Not a lot but thats my starting wage, I've been here for 4 months roughly and got the job two weeks after graduating high school so i'd say i'm doing pretty well for myself at this stage.

A degree can be a blessing for those motivated to make the most of it or a burden to those that chose hastily and chose a bad course or something they actually don't like or isn't of value.
The statistics suggest in the longterm you'll be better off. I'd would advise however not to just get a degree for the sake of it. If you're unsure about a field, try a few months work experience in the area.
The reason I advise caution is because I had a friend who got very strong grades late in shool. He decided to do Law to make the most of his high grades. Just before starting his degree he was convicted of a minor drug offence which would rule him out of his desired line of work.
He just about completed a law degree with okay grades that he could never really utilise.

I'm in college and I think I would have probably been better off doing an apprenticeship. The reason being that in the time I was taking on debt I could have been making money instead of losing money and already be a journeyman working at master. Which would probably be paying me more than I will start out at any entry level position with a degree.
If I consider the debt I accumulated in the time that I could have been working towards a journeymen then I would be much better off.
An apprenticeship often pays you to learn the trade without having to learn all the other stuff you will never use, that you have to learn for a college degree.

Financially, a trade trumps most undergraduate degrees financially. Like teknix says, "earn while you learn"
- a trade allows you relatively short periods on school (sometimes paid for by an employer) - Also, lots of time in the field earning and getting experience. - Usually entry level jobs pay decent wages aswell, especially if you are part of a union. - Trade school is cheap compared with university tuition.
Basically, a trade is a key to make good money, fast, with the least amount of effort.
However, It also takes a certain kind of person to go into the trades. I tried it, and it's not for me, for a variety of reasons.
I am now 28, and doing upgrading so I can go into university. Now that i've seen the alternatives (working your way up through a bullshit job, or getting a trade,) I am more motivated than ever to get a science degree.
Food for thought - my little cousin is going into welding and got into a union through a friends dad. He has a job offer to go work up north (pipeline i think, probably maintenance as a first year) and make $58/hr. My father, who has 20+ years experience in fisheries biology, and who works for the government makes about $42/hr.
I would say the earning potential of a trade is USUALLY hire than with most degrees. The time it takes, the time saved on school, and the money saved on school makes a trade the better financial decision all the way.
However, there's more to life than money.
As has already been mentioned - stay out of debt, and get a marketable degree. I can't see myself not getting into a decent career with a wildlife/fisheries/natural resources degree.

the problem for me is choosing.
i have many interests and i for some reason cant pick the one i like as a career. i get bored with doing just one thing
i worked in many different fields already clothing store fast food joint software company navy car audio one stop car shop... tinting home theater salesman etc
ilike alot of differentsports alot of different music alot of different everything
im not stuck on specific things like some people they are set in stone on things they like and things they hate like a computer...
but then the problem comes in that when its time to choose i have no answer to myself what i want to do as a career. but i do need to get one that can support my family
i also red these articles about the illusion of choice which i understand perfectly with the rational part of my mind but the other part of my brain does not understand it and thinks that the choices are endless and unlimited...
i just wanted to do so many things and alot of them are in direct conflict with eachother

Getting even more washed? You would actually pay to be nagged at by some ass when you have the internet? I would rather sit on the streets, not accepting charity, but starwe to death, and I would still be happier..
-------------------- And thus begins the reverse-fusing of our one-dimentional understanding, and adds ever-expanding perspectives, in depth and number; splitting our perception, and in so doing, seemingly irrationally, creates yet more one-ness, with all that ever was, is and will ever be, streching across the infinite, inunderstood concept of everything, percievable and not.
