The bias of perception * 1
    #19320995 - 12/24/13 12:38 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Let's take my cat for example:

Perspective 1, NOT GOOD ENOUGH: All he is, is a cat. His whole existence in it's full entirety, is going back and forth between these couple of rooms and doing aimless nd pointless cat things. That's all he ever does, and it's all he ever can/will do, and it genuinely seems as if it's all he'll ever want to do. Sometimes when I go downstairs, he sits at the top of the stairs and meows repeatedly and pathetically until I go back up. He'll literally sit there, and meow over and over for no reason aside from the fact he wants me to go back up. Once I go back up, he doesn't have anything to offer me aside from his mutual existence - and the same goes for me to him. He doesn't create any significant change to the world he's a part of, nor does he cause any sort of significant inspiration. Sometimes when he's hungry in the morning, he'll literally sit on the bed next to my face and meow in my ear repeatedly until I wake up to feed him, at which point he won't give me anything in return aside from the absence of his meow's. I sometimes feel like the amount of annoyance my brain derives from these wake-up meows is about the equivalent of having a fire alarm go off in my ear. What a waste of life, using up all of my resources. I spend my hard-earned money on keeping this creature alive, with nothing to show for it in return.

Perspective 2, WONDERFUL ENOUGH: But wait a second, turn on the lights, start up the fireworks, it's time for a celebration! He's a perfectly great use of life and more than "just" a cat.  He's a wonderful animal, about as real as any other including humans. He has these cool unique little bald spots in between his eyes and ears and sometimes when I walk in my room, he does this really funny thing where he wraps his arms around the corner of my bed and cocks his head to the side. One of his pupils is bigger than the other, hella cool shit. Sometimes when I'm sitting down, he stands on my lap and literally hugs me, like he puts his arms around my neck on my shoulders, and rests his chin on one of his arms. Other times I'll be laying on my stomach and he'll do the same, crawl on my back and rest his chin on my shoulder. What an interesting and cool animal. Right now he's sitting in between my curtain and the window, staring off into the distance. When I come home from work and go up to my room, he's waiting directly on top of the stairs for me, and then he runs into my room and starts scratching the side of one of my chairs the same way. Nearly every day he scratches the same leg of that chair in the same exact way when I get home, it's our thing coolest shjt. Sometimes if I pet him for long enough, he starts to drool, that's hilarious. Other times when I'm petting him, he rubs his chin against mine, or the top of his head to the underside of his chin. He also rocks this white flea collar these days, he looks very professional in it and it compliments his luscious fur delightfully.

But yeah, I just chose my cat to use as an example.

Funny that you started this thread as we're at my inlaws' watching Jerry Springer (not my choice but w/e).  I was thinking, "Wow, these . . . people . . . are such colossal wastes of space, the worst kind of oxygen thieves, reproducing like deranged rabbits."

You've inspired me to try to reframe my perception of Springer's guests, to find some personal peace in their existence.

This post makes me feel less worthless, in the sense of me feeling like the cat. The cats existence is so petty, and yet it can still serve a purpose for someone.

I have thought about suicide a lot because of how useless I am as a human being, but can't commit suicide because of all the people I would hurt.

I always wonder how all these people could care about someone so fucked in the head as I am, but when you put it in the perspective of a cat it all makes sense.

Maybe they just like the fact I am existing. My existence serves some form of purpose for them in reality and they can't handle the idea of me not existing so they put up with the cat.

Yeah, that dream was shot down :frown:

Now I am just trying to keep my sanity, while still feeling good. I am tortured by images of the past and want them all out.

So many traumatic events happened to me. When I was in the nut house I had a delusion that all the nurses were going to cut my heart out. I tried to jump out of the hospital window to kill myself, but it was locked up. The only other option was for me to walk up to the counter and ask for medication to sleep (which I was told was actually cianide by the voices). I went up and took the pill knowing I would not wake up the next day.

When I woke up the next day I started realizing these voices in my head were an illness. Since then I have been suicidally depressed because I now know I am ill and have to live with them.

I totally see how perception is everything, but getting over some of these things is difficult.

It's true: your world is only how you perceive it. This is apparent through many mental illnesses like autism and schizophrenia, as well as by tripping: your current state of mind is all that matters to you, right?

No matter how the world thinks you are, if you think you're a king, you'll be happy.

Now if only I could follow my own advice...I suffer from pretty low confidence due to being made fun of for my weight as a kid. I'm decently fit now, but it still haunts me. It doesn't affect my social skills with guys my age or adults, but definitely with girls... I'm not saying I don't have any experience with the ladies because that would be a lie. However, when we're all at a bar or a party or even class and my friends feel confident enough to just approach a random girl and start hitting on her, it's hard for me to see how they can do it.

I'm working on it, slowly, but its definitely a process. It's pretty fucking ridiculous how a little bit of teasing as a kid can change someone for life (hopefully not). I can even realize why I'm shy, and still can't get over it. Confidence is a bitch.

Not really sure what this has to do with perception, but it was still a nice read.

Confidence, or lack thereof, is something you have to decide to have.
I'm a super confident person, but I don't really have any good reason to be.
I just decide that I'm awesome, so I give off awesome vibes, and other people perceive me as awesome. It's all in your head man. Think of yourself as the shit, and fuck what anyone else thinks about you, and I assure you you'll develop self confidence, and other people will see you how you think of yourself.
