Sounds like a blast. Read up on kidnapping/taxi scams and be safe. I'm not trying to be alarmist, I'm just sayin be careful. I would LOVE to go there, and probably will one day.

Yeah it's pretty cool. There's like a bajillion different species of psilocybe mushrooms that grow in the fields near Popocatepetl. Try to find some of the famed Psilocybe Aztecorum. There is one I know of OG shroomerite who lives there but I'm not sure if he is keen on being namedropped. Don't worry too much about being kidnapped, just don't wear nice clothes when you go out.

For sure. Mexico City is nowhere near as bad as other major Mexican cities, like Juarez and Tijuana or even the nation of Colombia, but the cartels and other career-criminals are prevalent there. If you can speak fluent Spanish, don't ever speak a word of English. That's what makes you a potential target. It's crazy how a lot of Hispanic nations think ALL Americans/Europeans are rich and that your families can afford to pay for your ransom. I learned a lot about this stuff from my Colombian and Mexican acquaintances. That being said, I'm sure you'll be fine! You should probably be more worried about tropical diseases.

Nah the air is fine there. I just got back from 6 weeks there. I have been going there for 4 years, never noticed an air quality problem.
You might be able to catch the tail end of mushroom season, I left Mexico 2 weeks ago and the season was still going. A good place to hunt mushrooms near Mexico City is Popocatepetl. Even if the mushrooms are not going too much, the hiking and nature is amazing there.

Pureless said: Why mexico city...? its basically a blackhole of endless shanties.
That's not true at all - there are a few parts of town like that but most of it is average and some parts are super nice and quite safe.
Good parts of the city include chapultepec, condesa, roma, zona rosa and zocalo. Zocalo is a nice safe place to go at night, lots of people around and stuff to do. Condesa is good if you like bars and stuff like that.
There are some places that you do not want to end up late at night, you don't need to be paranoid but you do need to be smart about your security.
One cool thing about the city is that people don't stop for red lights after 11 pm or so. Driving there is really fun.
Mexico City has more attractive, single women than anywhere I have ever been in my life. They generally really like Americans also. If you don't know anyone and don't like bars, try okcupid and plenty of fish and you'll meet some really cool ladies.
Quote:
morrowasted said: Don't worry too much about being kidnapped, just don't wear nice clothes when you go out.
Kidnapping is super rare in the central and south of Mexico, that kind of stuff mostly happens in the north. However I second the recommendation to not wear nice clothes when you go out - nice clothes are a cop magnet.
If you have anything illegal make sure to carry at least $150 or so, preferably in pesos, to pay the cops. If you plan to have hard drugs make it $500. If you carry $500 you can do whatever you want and do not need to worry about being arrested.

I almost never need those in Mexico, and you can get them there cheaper than in the US if you do need them.

You don't need antibiotics or probiotics, just don't drink the tap water. I just got back from 5 months in Mexico and did not get sick at all. Zona Rosa is a nice area, you will love it.

I don't find speaking English to be at all dangerous in Mexico, in fact it makes most people think you are cool. Mexicans, especially ones under 40, love English and like to practice it every chance they get. You'll notice when they want to make something seem fancy or cool, they will use the English word instead of Spanish.
Speaking spanish won't fool anyone though, no matter what language you speak you will sound like a gringo until you have ten years there at least. Nothing wrong with that though, just don't act like a douchebag and they will love you.
One cool thing about Mexico is the taxis are super cheap. When you get in make sure they aren't going to charge you more than the meter says. Sometimes they try.
Also the food is super cheap, you can eat an awesome dinner of tacos for about $2. When I am there I usually eat seafood because an awesome seafood dinner is around the same price as fast food in the US.

Salvia is probably not easy to find, only psychonauts have it.
My friend from Mexico City is in my house now, I can ask her more about cool places to go.
You are welcome to try to get ketamine from a vet, I have no idea if that would work or not. Maybe tell them you have a horse you need to do surgery on....They won't believe you and that's ok.

Had my first street food today, tacos all pastor. Real good. I love all the fresh juice stands everywhere. So far it was real quiet last night because It was christmas. Today there's a lot more people out and about. My hotel seems to be good location in zona rosa. Lots of places in walking distance, the subway seems good too.
Alan: I look forward to seeing what your friend recommends.

Yea, tacos al pastor are some of my favorites. I love all the fresh juice in Mexico, it's everywhere.
The subway is great, and cheap. Always entertaining.
I asked my friend from Mexico City where are good places to go and she typed:
Para salir a tomar en la noche un trago, en el centro de la Ciudad de Mexico hay muchos bares y son buenos. La zona rosa esta bien, pero el centro es mejor.
El museo de antropologia es grande (en Chapultepec) y explica muy bien la cultura prehispanica de Mexico

Awesome Alan, I think I understood what your friend said. Im going to muse de anthropological now. Gonna check out the zoologica and ruins and mural in that same area.
There is a king tut exhibit going on were gonna try to visit.
Friskee.: I went with family but I agree an international gathering would be really cool. I used pipeline to book package and it was about 550-600 per person flight w/ nice hotel room for 6 nights in zona rosa.
I had pulque last night (fermented slimy slightly salty drink made from agave or similar cacti) its really good.
Lightning: ill keep u guys updated!
Tonight is friday night so should be interesante.

The whole year, if you look enough. But mushroom season is generally late June (finales de Junio) through late October (Octubre).
The best months are July and August. September is also really good. This year I left Mexico on December 1, and the season around Xalapa was still quite good when I left. It usually trails off in late October.

I just got back from 5 months of camping and mushroom hunting in Mexico, mostly by myself, and the only thing the cartels ever try to do to me is sell me weed.
Dude don’t give it away!
Mexico is one of the coolest countries I’ve ever been too. Im sure you could get kidnapped if you were in an obviously wrong area flashing money, but go try that same thing in your local hood and see how it works. Let people think what they will. Ive spent a decent amount of time in Mexico and never once felt like my life was in danger, and i was pretty obviously an american tourist with a small grasp on spanish at best.

a lot of what i have seen in the news in the past year on mexico points to it being a bit of a warzone. that may not be true in all areas, but i definitely saw armed militia in armored vehicles there to deal with the growing problem of i guess what would be cartel forces.

So far mexico city seems very safe for a big city, and the people are very friendly. I know it can be different in other parts but its cool to hear u didnt have any problems alan. Huge police presence here but they dont seem to be harassing anyone or anything from what I can tell.
Went to zoological, museo de anthropological, contemporary art. Cool places... tons of walking. The park they are in is huge! And its lined with brightly colored vendors yelling back and forth advertising there items. Quite entertaining. Listened to some really awesome jammyjazz at coffee shop in zona rosa last night.
Going to the bazaar de Sabado today in san angel and gonna explore coyoacan.

The news lies. I feel safer in Mexico than I do at home in Oakland.

You probably have a bigger chance of getting fucked with police than running into a cartel. Last year my friends spent the night in jail just for walking down the street at 1am.

He didn't go to jail for walking down the street, he went to jail for not paying the cops. Since he wasn't caught doing anything illegal he probably could have gotten off for a good price, but that is a risk you take if you walk around totally broke.

This type of behavior by the police can be limited if the citizens in Mexico will simply report the time, date, officer (or a description of the officer), and the incident. The citizen should simply make a phone call to an attorney while filing corruption charges against the city (ie John Doe VS the city of Tijuana).
If enough quality people stand up against corruption, it will be exposed and reduced.

I guess that's true. They had other randoms in the back of the truck by the time they were picked up. Sucks cause they just went for late night tacos and me and another buddy had to bail them out in the morning.

Went to san angel, coyoacan last night. Really cool art market and coyoacan is a very festive town with a lively square. I got some nice big bars of ground cacao with vanilla. Also got2 different types of mole . Today went to another art market got 3 more types of mole. Some really good huge chieftain. Everything at this market was cheap. Huge bag of passionfruit and sugarcane for a couple dollars. Also got some grasshoppers.
I asked a couple vendors who had herbs about salvia or Marie pastor... they didnt seem to understand they both pointed me to same herb but it didnt look like salvia d. It was greenish and had flower buds. Im still looking. I found a market with santa Maria, witchcraft stuff, called mercado de sonora. Im gonna try to check it out tomorrow.

salvia D is probably not a real big thing over there. i've also heard it tends to grow at higher altitudes, perhaps there are towns that would be more likely to have the diviners sage?
