Tyvek a bad filter for WBS jars?

Hey guys, so I remember reading somewhere you shouldn't use tyvek for grain jars because it isn't fine enough to filter mold spores?
Will these jars still work for wild bird seed? they are tyvek sealed over a 1/4in hole (with no silicon obstructing the hold obviously, lol). what kind of contam rate do people have using tyvek silicon'd on like this? and how long till I gotta replace it?

Also, how much silicon should I use in the injector port? will too much make it hard to push through?
Thanks

I used tyvek before I went to sfd and it always worked for me. I replaced it every time. I never used it more that once.
Btw sfd ftw

Tyvek works just fine. I use a combination though, both poly fill in a hole in the metal lid, and underneath that covering the jar lid under the metal parts, some tyvek. works just fine

maybe the polyfil serves as the injection port?

i like the combination personally because it adds an added layer of protection considering you puncture the tyvek with the needle tip. the poly is just another added layer that doesnt sacrifice the jars ability to exchange gas with it's surrounding environment.
it gives me peace of mind

sfds for the win. polyfil and tyvek are ok. but you should buy a sleeve of sfds and then never have to change your filters again or use foil on your jars during pc cycle

I'll probably still use foil just out of habit
I still don't really get why the foil isn't necessary. I mean doesn't tyvek keep water out too? whats different about the SFD's?

didnt read through the other responses at all whatsoever.. but all ive ever used as a filter for my self made jar lids is tyvek(in very much the same fashion as you have set up in the pictures), and i have never had any problems!
in fact, the only time i had any real problems, i used online store bought lids! the irony..

I always use tyvek from chem suits with outstanding results. The key is to double it so it's two layers thick. One layer doesn't filter well enough and three doesn't allow for enough gas exchange.

still, imo it is better to use one layer of tyvek and one little wad of polyfil. this is because the needle leaves a permanent hole in the tyvek and will with two layers of it even, whereas the polyfill will kind of close back up.
