Southern species that bruises blue, grows on cow dung, and has a purple/ brown or black spore print
    #19318692 - 12/23/13 09:51 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I'm looking to see if anyone knows whether there are any dangerous or inactive mushrooms that fit all of the following criteria.

-LBM
-Gulf Coast species
-Bruises blue
-grows on or around cow dung
-black or purple/brown spore print

I'm trying to figure out some basic criteria for mushrooms I find in my area, so I can cull out possibly dangerous ones without having to research every single one in detail
Thank you

If it has a purple/brown or black spore print and bruises blue (Not just colored blue) it is active and not poisonous.  Cow dung would be a good place to look in your area, please post pictures before you eat anything.

No.

That being said, If you're just starting out it's best to take clear, well lit photographs of all parts of the mushroom and post them to be sure.

Here's pretty much what your looking for: http://www.shroomery.org/12485/Panaeolus-cyanescens

Only panaeolus cyanescens and smaller specimens of psilocybe cubensis match those criteria. Except they're not really brown, especially panaeolus cyanescens, but that would be splitting hairs.

Thank you guys.

I was hoping that was the case.
I've been having issues because from the pictures I've been looking at it- there's a lot of variety in the way the mushrooms are colored and shaped, particularly depending on age.

the specimens I found were older and it was hard to judge, so I was trying to find some more concrete criteria.
much appreciated

If possible, always try to get several specimens of varying age - and take pictures
of their distinct features.
