Doing things your own way
#19321787 - 12/24/13 03:28 PM (10 years, 1 month ago) |

I'd say the most defining aspect about me is that I can do standardized things in a different way than most people do. Or not that I can do things differently, but that I just do them differently because its easier for me.
For example, I only type with 3 fingers (my middle finger on my right hand, my pointer finger on my left hand, and my thumb on my left hand ONLY for the space bar). I've been taught the "proper" way to type and I've been told its the most effective, but I can still manage well over 100 words per minute.
I also play the guitar like an idiot. I do some strange percussion with my picking hand and strange pull-offs with my fretting hand that makes the instrument sound like a combination of strings and deep bass/drums. My guitar teacher saw it and was like "what are you doing..." but after a year or two of sessions he really began to become fascinated by it.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I adapt things made for the masses in my own weird way, and I think this is showing of my weird personality. I was wondering if you guys on the Shroomery did the same thing, because I'd imagine that my creativity is matched by a lot of you here that share similar interests (liiiike smoking weed). I'm definitely not normal compared to the masses of people around the world, but I may be among ya'll.
Discuss strange things you do that are easier for you than the "right" way.

understandable man, I'm the same way, and always have been!
I type with my right index, left index and left middle, that's all. Yet I type fairly quickly and efficiently (probably just all the video games...)
I've also always held pencils and pens like an idiot, it's almost like a full fist grab, but it doesn't slow me down or affect me in any negative way.
Spice of life etc.

I've always done things my own way. Which got me in trouble a lot with my earlier jobs at fast food and stuff. They wanted a robot, not someone like me.
That's just the problem with it, you don't get bonus points EVER for doing things your own way.
But you still should.

Lol I forgot to add my pencil grip...my middle three fingers on top of the pencil and my thumb+pinky on the bottom to stabilize
Seems were pretty similar, thats' what I was lookin' for

Just imagine how fast you could type if you did it the proper way.

I always drive with my hands in my lap, holding the wheel with my thumbs and index fingers. I only really raise my hands to actually turn the wheel, but if I keep my hands in the "ten-two" position, my arms get tired really quickly.
I also kind of type in a similar way. I'll use pretty much every finger on my left hand, but only my index and middle fingers on my right.

I also never typed the way I was taught. I use my right index finger, left index, left middle and right thumb for space only.. right middle rarely if I have to go to the right of the P key. I also scored 120 couple years ago in high school, but I'm sure I've caught some more speed by now.
I don't believe it's so much as the way we're typing but our hand to eye coordination and memorization. How fast everything can "click"

I'm not so sure actually.
It's possible that I learned to type this way because it is the easiest for me. You may be 100% right that if I kept at it and typed like a normal person I could get 200+ words per minute or something crazy like that, but it might just be that I adapted to type the way my fingers were created to type.
Everyone's different right? I don't think accepted methods should be as widely accepted as they are.

This is definitely a part of it. I don't look at the keyboard; it's like rapid fire fingers.

The letters on a keyboard are designed that way on purpose, to be used for qwerty typing, so if you adapted to the actual design of the keyboard your wpm should increase.
The way you type is the easiest for you because it's the most simplistic. If you were to bother to learn the correct way based off your keyboard structure, you would find yourself typing more words per minute.
But go ahead, please, don't listen to me and continue to peck away at the keyboard like bird.

typewriter letters jammed up due to the way they were set up. "qwerty" equals less jam equals efficient typing. sucha dumb phrase... qwerty
I learned some things a few years ago which was to stop learning and to start thinking. Everyone just does what they see or what they're told to do. So i kinda flipped my life around.
I do things they way i see fit. What fits my personality. I think thats what most people should do. do what suits them. If it works it works.
now if you have an OCCUPATION that requires you to have lives at stake...than maybe "bad" habits should die hard lol

Seriously dude...try dvorak for a week and you'll never go back. It's so much smoother and causes much less fatigue. You can get little stickers for your keyboard if you want.

I always did math differently than the textbooks taught. I found easier ways to get the same answers. I rarely used a calculator, and I never showed my work. My senior year of high school, I actually got an elective credit for teaching algebra 1 while the actual teacher just graded papers. My geometry teacher would always teach out of the book, then ask me how I would do it. If my way proved more efficient, she wrote it down to teach it to other classes.

I am so with you. I do math a lot differently than most. but I think most Geniuses do so as well. Am I genius? No fucking way.
Math is easy to get away with cause there are so many ways to get to the right answer, not just one way. Your way might be harder for someone to figure out an equation and vise vesa.

You're absolutely right. I'm not technically a genius either, but I'm pretty close according to IQ.

I love math and do it really differently too. My teachers always asked how I got the answers, and I couldn't even explain...

I actually hate math, I'm just really good at it. I never had a problem explaining how I got my answers. Today, if I were to see any math aside from basic problems, I'd have trouble with it at first because I don't remember.
