New Build/ Cooling 2 GTX 780s and i7.
    #19311123 - 12/22/13 09:19 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I am building a computer: http://pcpartpickGTXer.com/p/2oe0o ; I need to cool 2 GTX 780s and an i7-3770k. What would be the best way to do this? I was thinking liquid, but I am not sure how to go about this. I was thinking two loops one for the CPU and a shared for the GPUs. The case is a NZXT Phantom 630 so it has room for a radiator at the top. Suggestions regarding compatibility, parts, or cooling?

Cheers!

Some cases come with 250mm fans or even larger, they're huge and spin at lower rpm's so they're quieter. But I've heard they're not as efficient at dissipating heat as smaller ones. Personally I've never wanted to deal with a liquid cooling setup, so I'd try and get as many fans in the most well ventilated case I could find.

You plan on overclocking that bitch?

I wouldn't really recommend watercooling GPUs if you are not familiar with it already.

You are looking at roughly $400-600 in extra parts for watercooling if you want to go that route and build a custom loop (2x 780 waterblocks, CPU waterblock, 2x radiators, pumps, fans, reservoir, tubing, fittings, etc).

It's a lot of extra work. Not to mention if you have reference 780s, you would need to remove the heatsink completely to attach the GPU waterblock, again not something I recommend unless you are familiar with watercooling already.

The 780s run much cooler than previous generation GPUs and are also more power efficient. Running them on air cooling should be perfectly fine.

If you go with a builder like cyberpower you can get their watercooling kit and appropriate matched 780's and such, and of course the warrenty and everything else buying it custom built from someone else comes with.

It does get pricey as fuck though to start adding the waterblocks for video cards and such.

Well, I decided to turn the 2 GTX 780s into one GTX 690. My reasoning is that right now, the 690 has 2 physical GPU chips per card, while the 780 has one. By the time the 690 starts getting slow, I just buy another and SLI them. By then the 690 will be pretty cheap, but will raise my FPS significantly.

I do have a decent amount of experience with building not liquid cooling, however, I am getting my friend who has lots of experience with liquid cooling loops.According to his suggestion I changed the case (NZXT Phantom 630 to 900D) the GPU (2 GTX 780s to one 690) the mobo to a maximus VI formula, and the cpu to an i7 4770k

Yes, I can see overclocking in the future. The thing is right now I work off my laptop. It is an old laptop. I am limited to internet browsing and word processing because right now, the average core temp is 80. I have the internal fan running, as well as an external one blowing under it. It is by no means under powered, but the heat gets to it every time.

2x 780s will outperform a 690...
I would go with the 780s personally. You will be limited to 2GB of VRAM with a 690... where with the 780s at least you will have 3GB.
Also dual GPU cards tend to have weird issues sometimes with some games. 690 is a strong card, but it is limited in VRAM and that may become an issue for you.

You will probably want the extra video memory for now and future games..

Or go all out and get a Titan..

You can still overclock on air.... you don't need to go water.. unless you are doing EXTREME overclocking or trying to break record benchmarks or something... but then you would be doing LN2.

Your laptop CPU running a 80c is probably due to it being clogged to shit with dust. Laptops build up dust a lot faster than desktops. When's the last time you blew that thing out with some canned air? In a worst case scenario you might have to take it apart and blow everything out, then reseat the CPU with fresh thermal paste, as the thermal paste on there could be dried out.

If you feel like doing water by all means do it. I'm just saying it can be a big pain in the ass sometimes, raises the cost by a lot ... and troubleshooting issues if you have problems is a total BITCH. You can't remove a video card without completely draining your water loop... so you would want to set up a drain tap. And like I mentioned, the 700 series chips run pretty cool - watercooling is probably overkill even if you are overclocking.

But by all means if you are intent on it, go for it. My recommendation would be to just get a all-in-one CPU watercooler like a Corsair H100i, or build a custom loop for the CPU only, but leave the GPUs on air. Although the 900d is a VERY excellent case for watercooling. So whatever you like. I'm just warning you that it might be more expensive and more work than you think.

Here's a couple systems I have built (for work and for other people):

(Note this is 4-Way SLI 480s - which pretty much required watercooling unless you want to fry eggs on your GPUs)... like I said the 700 series runs WAY WAY cooler than previous generations.
Total cost of just the watercooling parts in this rig was around 1k, if I remember correctly.

Whatever  you do, do NOT listen to anything shroomism says unless he give you free video game keys, only THEN is his opinion valid.
