-pope innocent 1 named pope
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
According to his biographer in the Liber Pontificalis, Innocent was a native of Albano and the son of a man called Innocentius,[1] but his contemporary Jerome referred to him as the son of the previous pope, Anastasius I, probably a unique case of a son succeeding his father in the papacy.[2] Innocent I lost no opportunity in maintaining and extending the authority of the Roman apostolic See. (Seen as the ultimate resort for the settlement of all ecclesiastical disputes.) His communications with Victricius of Rouen, Exuperius of Toulouse, Alexander of Antioch and others, as well as his actions on the appeal made to him by John Chrysostom against Theophilus of Alexandria, show that opportunities of this kind were numerous and varied. He took a decided view on the Pelagian controversy, confirming the decisions of the synod of the province of proconsular Africa, held in Carthage in 416, which had been sent to him, and also writing in the same year in a similar sense to the fathers of the Numidian synod of Mileve who had addressed him (Augustine of Hippo among them). In addition he acted as metropolitan over the bishops of Italia Suburbicaria.[1][3] The historian Zosimus in his Historia Nova suggests that during the sack of Rome in 410 by Alaric I, Innocent I was willing to permit private pagan practices as a temporary measure. However, Zosimus also suggests that this attempt by pagans to restore public worship failed due to lack of public interest, suggesting that Rome had been successfully Christianized in the last century.[1] Among Innocent I's letters is one to Jerome and another to John II, Bishop of Jerusalem, regarding annoyances to which the former had been subjected by the Pelagians at Bethlehem. He died on 12 March 417. Accordingly, his feast day is now celebrated on 12 March, though from the thirteenth to the twentieth century he was commemorated on 28 July.[4] His successor was Zosimus.

On this day in 1943 Roosevelt and Churchill jointly proclaim Dwight Eisenhower to be the Commander-in-Chief of the armies that will enter Europe and liberate it. Eisenhower organized and commanded the build-up that culminated in the D-Day landings in Normandy France.

Day 40:
Krampus:
Today's history fact of the day is about my favorite Christmas beast of folklore, Krampus!!!!

This figure of old Germanic folklore is where the tradition of Santa Claus comes from. Krampus is a beast like creature that would come around much like Santa every December, and weigh childrens soles as they slept. If it was determined the child was good, the great majority of the time they were not even rewarded beyond not being punished.
But if was determined that the child was naughty, that's were the fun began. Krampus would take his trydent and impale the children in their sleep, then place them in his sack. Funnily enough this is where Santas red suit comes from, the blood of naughty children. After he would collect the children he took them to his lair where they would live as his slaves!
Here are some fun authentic Krampus holiday greeting cards to get you in a cheery holiday mood!

The tradition of Krampus is still celebrated today in festivals such as Krampuslaufen, in which participants get drunk, dress up as Krampus and run through the city. Krampus is diffinatly on of those things that make me proud to be German, so grim, dark, and fun!

Naw dawg, it's the real origins of Christmas brah
http://www.cannabisculture.com/articles/3136.html
Quote:
Although most people see Christmas as a Christian holiday, many of the symbols and icons we associate with Christmas celebrations are actually derived from the shamanistic traditions of the tribal peoples of pre-Christian Northern Europe.
The sacred mushroom of these people was the red and white amanita muscaria mushroom, also known as "fly agaric." These mushrooms are now commonly seen in books of fairy tales, and are usually associated with magic and fairies. This is because they contain potent hallucinogenic compounds, and were used by ancient peoples for insight and transcendental experiences.
Most of the major elements of the modern Christmas celebration, such as Santa Claus, Christmas trees, magical reindeer and the giving of gifts, are originally based upon the traditions surrounding the harvest and consumption of these most sacred mushrooms.

Houses in Amsterdam are often narrow, long and high because back in the golden age the taxes were only based on the width of your house.
This is because most of them used to be warehouses in the colonial times. Taxes were therefore based on the amount of space along the canals your building was occupying. More space along the canal meant easier influx of goods and more storage space, hence more revenue, hence more taxes!
