Sciatica and depression.....

I've had a trapped nerve/ sciatica for around four months now. My doctors passed me from pillar to post and it was until two weeks ago I got to see a physio.
I've put on at least two and a half stone (now weight 13 st 7 lbs at a height of 5'11) and am comfort eating. I'm depressed as I can't excersize like I used to - running, bike rides, aerobics. Even walking hurts and I have to waddle instead of walking or with a massive limp. I'm still working as a chef and have had no time off for recuperation.
I've been prescribed 10mg amitriptyline daily, but it is making me more depressed and I have been nearly three months clean cold turkey from anti-depressants out of choice. I have figured I'm not going to take these.
Can anybody help in some guidance as to what excersize I can do and how I can lift my spirits? I'm only 28 and should be top of my game so to speak, but in reality I'm getting to be an overweight mess living in the same clothes as I'm too fat for wardrobe. I just want to be healthy again.

Sciatica is some serious shit. Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Does weed provide you with any extra comfort? I would try to eat a healthy and varied diet. Lots of vegetables and fruits obviously. If you're putting on weight, eat less. Remember you need fats and carbs and sugar and salt so don't go with any of that stupid fad shit like gluten free. Just plain common sense, more veggies less meat, whole wheat bread, brown rice, milk but not too much, avoid fast food and microwave shit. As for exercise, don't let your doctor out of the office until he talks to you about it. Sciatica must demand some kind of special dos and don'ts.

I know you can Google but here's from the Mayo Clinic
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/sciatica/DS00516/DSECTION=lifestyle%2Dand%2Dhome%2Dremedies
Quote:
For most people, sciatica responds well to self-care measures. You'll heal more quickly if you continue with your usual activities but avoid what may have triggered the pain in the first place. Although resting for a day or so may provide some relief, prolonged inactivity will make your signs and symptoms worse.
Other self-care treatments that may be helpful include:
Cold packs. Initially, you may get relief from a cold pack placed on the painful area for up 20 minutes several times a day. Use an ice pack or a package of frozen peas wrapped in a clean towel. Hot packs. After two to three days, apply heat to the areas that hurt. Use hot packs, a heat lamp or a heating pad on the lowest setting. If you continue to have pain, try alternating warm and cold packs. Stretching. Stretching exercises for your low back can help you feel better and may help relieve nerve root compression. Avoid jerking, bouncing or twisting during the stretch and try to hold the stretch at least 30 seconds
.

Thanks for the reply.
I'm not a smoker, plus I usually get paranoia from weed so it's a no-no. I do have a lot of Kratom lying around, but do not have scales - just take a couple of capsules every other day. I was taking a lot of ibuprofen and other such over the counter pharms, but know they are harmful so only take them when really bad.
My physio gave me a list of stretches to do, but I can't do them on my own and I'm always pooped due to work and general pain/moving about.
I mainly eat good foods. Never microwave foods, I don't drink pop (sodas), it's just I've become accustom to eating a lot in a day to feel better. I'm very down and it's changing all of my hard work mentally.
I don't have another physio appointment til the 2nd Jan and only then is that my second one, will it be safe to try a gentle jog or use skipping ropes or something? I dont want to rupture anything.
*Thank you for the link also my friend

The 2nd is right around the corner. I think you should wait and ask then.

If you don't have any spine problems, check this link out and see if it would help. And as I've mentioned in another link, if you want an alternative way to lose weight, you can use supplements as I mentioned somewhere in this section.

i was dealing with back pain/ sciatica for YEARS...took ibuprofren to the point of giving myself an ulcer...i had crippling back pain along with it though...like someone buried an axe in my lower back...
turned out i had a tumor growing back there that no doctor had the sense to see on any MRI...it was pretty rare, but i've since had it removed (but they couldn't get it all because if where it is) got radiation on the mutha to kill it...
i'd suggest getting an MRI and having a doctor let you know whats up...preferably a NEUROSURGEON...they are specialists with the nerve type stuff
I know what your going through, and it seems like no one can help...do you have a slipped disc? herniated disc? How did you come to the conclusion that it is a 'trapped nerve'?
i used to do a lot of exercise on a elliptical machine...it is a lot easier on your knees and doesn't put alot of pressure on your back with the jolting that can be associated with running...fuck that shooting pain shit
get yourself checked out...it may get expensive, but this is your life we're talkign about...your livelyhood

I am sorry you are not feeling well.
As a massage therapist, I often see patients with sciatica. Massage can greatly help relieve sciatic pain. Often, a muscle under your gluts (so in your buttcheek) called the piriformis will entrap (not pinch or impinge) your sciatic nerve causing low back pain and pain radiating down one or both legs. I would suggest starting with a massage therapist. Tell them the type of pain you are having, and probably they will be able to help. Be warned, they will need to do some work on your gluts, which is awkward for some people at first. I've found deep work to be most effective. Ask if your therapist knows how to do a piriformis release. I have had a lot of clients give great feedback on the piriformis release. Sometimes your therapist might see a need to do a psoas release in addition to a piriformis release.
If you have the means, it may benefit you to see a chiropractor as well; massage and chiropractic care are complimentary and if you see a chiropractor who takes x-rays and is willing to show you your films, it could help you to understand why you are having the pain you're having.
Also, look up stretches specifically for the piriformis muscle online. Drink lots of water. There is also a book worth looking up if you find massage therapy to be beneficial. It is called "The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook" by Dave and Davies. It has a lot of information on self massage for specific muscles related to specific types of pain. Hope this helps and that you are able to find some relief.
OH. And amitryptaline (Elavil, right?) takes a while to work, but it seems to me they need to be treating your pain and your depression will take care of itself when you are feeling physically well again. A side effect of this med is increased risk of suicide so if you start having thoughts of suicide tell your Dr. ASAP because this is quite possibly a side effect of the med.

Ehy! I feel sorry for your troubles, and I dont have many advices regarding them, except one: I once read that Sambucus nigra's fruit is great for sciatica, whether juiced or whole. We were making wine out of it since there's tons of it where we live but never succeeded. Maybe it can help you, good luck!

Today I went to the physio. She stretched me and massaged me for a bit as it was my first proper appointment.
You know what? I feel about 70% better just from that! I can move much better and went for a three and a half hour walk afterwards! So it just looks like a couple more times of massaging and I'll be done!
Happy happy!

Congrats. My guess is they told you to go about your normal routines except show a little caution with lifting things. Am I right?

Sciatica sucks! I just got prescribed Prednisone, so we'll see if that does anything. I'm scheduled for an MRI in a couple weeks. After that maybe a cortisone shot. And if that doesn't work I might have to get surgery. I just want to get over it and get back to doing the things I love. I hope the physio works for you OP.

Yeah, I have been told to watch how I go with my daily life and lifting.
I'm lucky that its just twisted nerves/muscles and not something snapped, slipped or broken - all the same it hurts like hell and wouldn't wish it on anyone.
Cycling has helped me and was recommended by the physio too.
Anyone else in any back pain predicament, please keep your head up and literally reach for the skies if you can. Stretch, drink some refreshing green teas just for your spirits. Make sure you can get out if you can, even if only for a short time. Go to a sports clinic and try to get a proper rub down if you can afford to even if you are awaiting other treatment.
