Best Plants to Grow as a Novice

Hey all you growers,
I'm looking to start gardening; I've never grown anything before so I'm 100% a novice.
Could any of you recommend plants that are good for novices to grow? I'm interested in things I can consume/smoke/use for mind-altering effects mostly.

Although I love carrots, that's not exactly what I'm looking for...

Step one, figure out your USDA hardiness zone. That will give you an idea as to what plants you can keep outdoors year round, etc. From there you can move on to what plants will survive without being wintered indoors and such. Its a fairly crucial part of information.
Past that however i would argue that any plant given the right conditions is easy to grow.

And as 1234go said cacti. Mind alering cacti. Great for the soul and they thrive on neglect. It should almost be cardinal rule. DO NOT OVERLOVE YOUR CACTI unless dealing with seedlings. You cant get more novice than cacti.

Thanks to you both as well. As I hear from a lot of you, cacti is the way to go. According to my USDA hardiness zone, the absolute extreme cold temperature is 0 to 5º F. Is this low or high for the US, and is it conducive to planting some good cacti outside?
Or I guess a better question would be is there a good list of what the minimum temperature is for a bunch of cacti/plants?

I highly reccomend morning glory. They grow extremely fast and dont take much care. They grow easily and in some places are even considered weeds! Very fast growth and low cost.
The active chemical is in the seeds, and is lysergic acid amide. (LSA) It is similar to LSD except most note it as being more of a depressant than stimulant like lsd.
<SNIP> Up to a foot of good growth a year, and require little care once you get started and find a good place with sun, but also not so much to cause sunburning.
San pedro is a nice source of mescaline. Mescaline is my personal favorite, and the after effects can be life changing in a postive spiritual matter. Others include Salvia Divinorum (higher maintnence), baansteriopsis caapi (as others have said)datura grows wild in most places, if not im sure you could buy seeds and theyd work nicely.
I hope this is not too much.. I know of many more.

Good luck! Bloom booster is good for morning glories when you get them. You dont want to have a super good soil fkr the morning glories, because too high nitrogen will cause a lot of growth but make a LOT less blooms.

Hey guys I'm kinda like justincord and I'm not trying to thread jack no one but I think my question could help some others reading this thread but I have been searching the forums looking for things that I could easily grow in my climate which I believe is hardiness zone 6 but I have been having a lot of trouble finding a thread, post or site that specifies and or lists different ethnobotanicals that can be grown well in each climate zone. So I was wandering if anyone knows where I could find this information and if it doesn't exist how could I figure these things out?
And 1 more thing I was wandering that might be best off in this thread is whether there is a list of active ethnobotanicals that other people have grown and noticed that they actually have the effect that they are said to have? I found a thread for active species that people said were no good and not to waste your time on but I haven't been able to find the other side of the question.

Your a good man king knowledge I have been searching for the same information on active plants and the zones that they can be grown in since I was planning on starting a B. Caapi in what I believe to be zone 6 along with some bridgessi that I'm scared would die in the winters here. Does anyone have any knowledge about this that they wouldn't mind sharing?

A lot of the plants listed here will grow well (if not better) in your area, you just may have to be more careful about cold snaps and whatnot...
Some will say morning glories are not worth the effort to extract from, and i would have to agree.

Thanks 1234 is there any other place that would have more info on active species and the climates they can survive and grow in? If not I believe someone out there needs to do some travel, study and create a site with this info for people who need it.

I don't know of a specific site that has the info you're seeking.
But what I do is just google the specific plant in question, and a number of sites with good info will come up. Guaranteed.
davesgarden.com is the only site i can muster up that may have some of the answers you seek.
