Failed cacti grower

Why is it just branching out ? Do you think i should reset it somehow ?

I gave my loph a first watering of the year a few years ago and it cracked. It didn't do anything for a couple of years then started growing another one out of the middle.

All my columnar cacti went rotten at the tips. I'm really fussy about pristine plants, as soon as there's something wrong i usually just get rid of them.
The only thing i can grow are Opuntias which grow like weeds,, .
Behold my favorite cacti.

Ahhhhhh.

That's what it does. It's a monstrose form, it won't grow a neat column upwards and throw obedient side-offshoots that will grow upwards themselves.

Some species must be watered carefully after being dry for some time. Lophophora and Turbinicarpus are notable for splitting if you water them too heavily, just go lightly for the first couple of times and you will be all right. Your Lophophora has lost its growing point (I suspect red spider mite) but has since regenerated a new one from an areole. In time, all that scarring will go away under the soil line and you will have a nice plant again.

In Loph time.
So, basically when you are about ready to die

No spider mites. I was growing weed in the same house, i would have kicked it out without remorse. My Astrophytum asterias was mobbed by mealy bugs so i ended up throwing that out.
I don't have many cacti left. Only the survivors.
I'm going to start a herb garden next year.
Thanks for the advice !

Nar i'm keeping it,, . I said ages ago even if i had to give up all my plants i'd up root it and carry it around in my pocket if i had to. It was doing alright at first, i was gutted when it cracked. I wet it right through, i'll be more careful in future. Looks like i'm in for the long haul with this one.

You haven't seen the fallen comrades. I couldn't get them through winter. I thought i was supposed to keep them dry and cool but they just got in bad condition. The columnar's rotted and the globulars collapsed on themselves. The few i have left seem to be doing alright. The monstrose is a bit scraggly, i think that's 2 years growth, the off shoots.
I live in the UK. It's so dull at this time of year. We only get 2 months of sun in summer if we're lucky.

Don't be so sure about that. Check out this before and after pic. I had to cut almost all of the skin off my loph to prevent rot from spreading. The second pic was taken less than 2 years later. Today, you can't even tell the damage happened at all since all of the old growth has recessed below the soil line.
First picture taken 8-2-10, second picture taken 3-19-12
