@Mushy
I think if you can appreciate competition in any way, you should be able to understand why sports fans exist. I'm guessing Kroniks from Miami, and if you haven't noticed yet most people only give a damn about their home teams. Like great intellect, great physical health/performance is very admirable IMO. What's funniest to me, is people who like some sports bashing other sports

Well I don't mean to get personal, and I hate to be a hypocrite, but it seems like what people should be treating as entertainment but they treat it as real life.  I guess I just want people who are very into sports to admit that it is just a meaningless distraction.  Just because someone wins at a competition, doesn't mean it means something.  It is frustrating because people do act like it means something, when things that mean alot to me mean absolutely nothing.  Sameasiteverwas

I understand where you're coming from moonrock. It's true that it is purely entertainment, I take it as such a real part of my life because I get to see these athletes IRL all the time, and even though I know deep down they could give a shit about me personally, it still seems they do.

I really like what pcp said here.

I also agree that people who bash other sports besides the ones that they enjoy is ridiculous. I see this the same way as people that do certain drugs bashing people that use different drugs than themselves.

Also, yes I've been in the Miami area for the majority of my life, I have a lot of friends here that are fans of teams that are nowhere near here. I can't really understand that aspect of sports fandom.

I love sports, you can’t pin it to just one thing though.
Me and kron like sports for entirely different reasons. There was a really good documentary on HBO on this just while ago, it was called like sports in america or something.

My main reasons would have to be that i love playing sports and I’m very competitive with them, so of course i like watching the highest level of competition. Sports are beautiful too, when everything clicks just right it is like you said, a total boner  Shit soccer is called la joga bonita or something like that in most countries. Most of my biggest heroes growing up were great athletes, so it has that connection to my childhood, and there are some guys you just look up to as great men worthy of trying to emulate no matter what age you are.

The biggest reason for me is pride and connection to the community. You know when you see a guy thats a fan of the same team you automatically have that connection and something to talk about. I can’t tell you how many times i strike up random conversation waiting in line just because i see my teams logo on a guys hat or something. Plus its great to see guys from your town/area make it big, the hometown hero. A guy I went to high school with won a Super Bowl ring last year and that was sweet for the whole community.

Tradition is another major reason. Theres a line I’ve always liked, you don’t pick what teams you like you are born into them. My great grandpas literally cheered for the same teams 100 years ago as i do today. When you live in a place thats blessed enough to have a strong local or regional rivalries you know this first hand. Just like i said I’m instantly friends with a guy with my teams shit on, opposite with my rivals. "Ahhh fuck this guy what kinda fucking asshole likes the fucking raiders” :burke:

I feel sorry for people that “don’t get” sports. I mean i could do without the disappointment that comes year in year out when my teams consistently fall short but guys who "don’t get" sports will never get those random connections with complete strangers that make you that make you think “hey maybe the world isn’t this big bad place we are led to believe it is, and that we aren’t all so different from each other after all"

How isn’t it real life?

Its obviously not meaningless to the people that like it. To some people sports mean more than you would believe.

Example. In South Africa during apartheid their rugby team was seen as a symbol of white oppression and domination, so during that rugby tourney (in SA) Mandela put on one of their jerseys to signify healing between the people of the country

Shit like that, isn’t fake and meaningless...
In a moment that would symbolize almost every reason why one would like sports.

And I agree. It is real life; it's "living in the now." I think you're underestimating most fans though, I'm sure 99% of them understand and appreciate other teams. I think it's respectable for someone else to stand up for their team when the time comes, it makes for better competition. And I'm used to it, too, because I've mostly been traveling the past few years and the STL Cardinals have been kicking ass

Elax, I believe you and I like sports for pretty much the same reasons.I don't know if you read the first post I wrote in this thread, but your reasons for liking sports are pretty spot-on with what I mentioned.

Your post was great btw. Very well put.

I said I don't care earlier when I was high and lazy, and that's true for most sports, but not baseball.

I'm a die hard STL Cardinals fan. In fact, I have a Cardinals tattoo. I'm still disappointed that Boston beat them in the Series again.

I do, I actually have my day ruined when my team loses

Ive been a Cowboys fan for 20 years and my emotional state is directly impacted by the outcome of Sundays games

Same with Michigan football

I also root for the college I went to, Arizona State, but dont really get too worked up if they lose

But I played sports all my life and I am a very competitive person so I guess that lives on

Michigan and Dallas are the only 2 teams that I actually "care" about in the sense that I actually get pissed when they loss and actually get excited when they win

edit- This coming from someone who has 6,200 sports forum posts though. Almost more than I have in the Pub. The 2nd highest forum that I post in and a forum I really pushed for to be created in the first place

"is  obviously not meaningless to the people that like it. To some people sports mean more than you would believe" - elax

sure me and elax have out differences. but this is true

just look at what happened in boston this year with the bombings. the red sox and bruins are what truly helped a sport city come together and overcome a tragedy. it mite be something you only understand if ur from boston cuz we take our sports fuckin serious here. but those 2 teams helped a lot of people and helped a city come together after about a week of being afraid and a 2 day manhunt in a town that is essentially a part of boston

I really care about basketball but other sports I don't know or watch much.  Some towns only have one sports team and that town supports it strongly, and when those teams do well it gets the entire city excited in a palpable way.  I think it's about the team putting a positive light nationally on the town they represent; the solidarity of the team is reflected in the support the towns group together to give their teams.  It really brings a city together I've seen it happen.
But some teams are stuck in shit towns that get no love.

look at what the USA hockey team did in 1980 for the whole united states with the US vs Russia thing

sports are more than just something to watch on TV and drink beer too. it brings people together, people who may not know eachother. all for one common goal

Watching sports gets me excited and helps me relax. Big wins have been some of the happiest moments of my life. But for any sports fan, at the heart of it is crushing disappointments year after year but still clinging to, not hope, but love. Even when you see your team's mediocrity and the crushed hope of another year cracks your fucking skull, you're still there with them, and they're still there in your heart. You cannot be divorced. It's in your fucking blood until you die. And sure, from a different perspective it doesn't matter for shit. It's a stupid waste of time and money. It's ironic but it's the mindlessness of it that brings me comfort. I love studying this shit that doesn't even matter. If I concerned myself with what matters I would be in a serious emotional black hole since nothing matters in the end.

I love basketball but I don't cheer for the local team - they suck.  I cheer for the most entertaining teams to watch which I find to be the Miami Heat and the Golden State Warriors.

Love playing sports...

Don't care to watchem and I HATE hearing about them when I'm not watching them. It's like whole globe has nothing better to talk about but the bulls vs the hot dogs every year. When does that subject lose its ever lasting intensity? It's the same thing every year!
