side pinning problem. Help please.
    #19318708 - 12/23/13 09:56 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

So I have two monotubs of pe fruiting. I didn't use a liner and now have side pins almost ready to pick. As well as the side pins I can see blobs and pins just starting on the surface. The total dry weight of the side pins will probably be 3/4 of a ounce. The environment on the sides being suck a better micro environment than the surface is why I am thinking the side pins are so much further along than the surface. I have packed the holes along the surface really tight now and added a cool mist humidifier to the room to increase the rooms rh. My question is should I dunk after picking the side pins or should I pick side pins then wait for the surface to finish before I dunk? I would assume that side pins maturing a ton faster than the top is a common problem when not using liners. I guess what I am asking it what amount of fruit produced by your monotub would deplete it enough to warrant a dunk?

I have started to mist and noticed that the surface is just collecting then water in pools. Should I let the water sit atop of the surface for am little bit to see if it will absorb it? And is what I explained in the prior post pretty common?

Side pinning is how it works in nature.  You'll see far more mushrooms at the edge of a cow pie than in the middle.

Just pick them and re-hydrate the substrate as necessary.  Don't worry about the fruits being around the edges this time, because that's the most natural place.  If you want them in the middle next time, use a liner so it can shrink with the substrate, eliminating that air gap.

Is there anything I can do to get the surface to fruit better now? PE is totally the wrong variety to skip the liner. The first flush mutants are hard enough to know when to pick when they are completly visable. With them growing on the sides it makes them real hard to see so who know when to pick. Another problem with not using a liner is PE takes so long from pin to mature fruit that just around the time to harvest the side pin the surface is starting to pin. This makes it incredibly hard to harvest without risking ruining the surface flush. Typically I would pick the surface fruits and then flipp the monotub over so its resting on the just picked surface which makes it easy to harvest the side pins and bottom ones. Does anyone know if I can still do this without damaging the surface pins? When I say surface pins I am talking about the mutant blobs where just the orange cap is visable. They don't have any sort of stem just a blob. Thanks in advance.

Nothing wrong with side pins, I get them all the time since I keep forgetting to put a liner on my tubs. I have always gotten decent yields though anyways. I pulled over an ounce off of my first little monotub with just a quart of spawn and they were all side pins. Just use a knife and a pair of tweezers or tongs to pull the mushrooms off of the side of the tub. A light over the top of the tub might help the shrooms to grow up and to the surface and those are way easier to pick compared to the ones that grow strait down. Look in my sig! Those were side pins and I was beyond happy to see them!
