beginner grow questions
    #19318191 - 12/23/13 08:14 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

i got 2 pereskiopes in the mail and they werent rooted, i read i can just plant them in soil and they will root themselves. im new to growing plants so id appreciate some input.

also i also received some bridgesii seedlings, will they be ok in the package until i get the pereskiopes rooted? how should i store them?

and i planted my s. divinorium rooted cutting, how hard is it to grow? ive been doing readin but i read mixed opinions on things. is a humidity tent necessary? right now i have her in a makeshift sgfc

Oh,well,I just wanted to see what you were working with, that's all:grin:Pereskiopsis are really one of the easiest plants to root.I used to have so many from just taking cuttings and sticking them in moist soil. They never did take too long to produce roots, and from one plant you can build up a whole army of them.I tried growing Salvia on several occasions, and that is one of the few plants I just can not grow.I'm sure the others can help you out on that one.You can also give the Pereskiopsis any light schedule I would think, and they will root no matter what.

I think your wife's cactus is some kind of opuntia, and I would at least replant the bridgesii up right until you are ready to graft them. You could also repot the pereskiopsis in a smaller pot, with drainage, but that will work either way:grin:

As KBG stated, these are very easy and forgiving to beginners. I see they're in soil, hopefully under a light too. Keep the soil moist and they'll root. You should expect growth in the next month if temperatures remain around 70F(20C). The ones you have I would cut and make more cuttings. A cutting with 5 or so leaves will be fine, the remaining stumps will put out new branches.

Because it's going to take some time for the pereskiopsis to produce new growth it would pay to pot them up. Put them 10 inches below that fluorescent and wait a couple of days before watering. Cactus roots can break on handling, which can let in pathogens. Giving them a couple of days for the roots to heal is always wise. If they start to darken and go red, back the light off a couple of inches. You'll probably have to move it closer though. What specs are the light?

With little to no plant experience you sure picked a difficult one. Some people seem to have no trouble growing it and some people just can't seem to grow it. Don't beat yourself up if it dies. Once you get a bit of plant experience then try again.

Plants in the mail in similar shape to yours have a 50/50 chance of survival usually. I would probably keep that in humidity until it stabilises and starts to grow a few sets of leaves. Then I would slowly acclimatise it to normal conditions and let it bitch(distort, twist, brown edges) until it starts to grow nicely(acclimated to your environment).

I fear that jar doesn't have any drainage holes. If this is the case you should re pot it into something with drain holes. Salvia is susceptible to root rot. This is brought on by over watering and sitting in wet soil.

Good luck!

In the first few days, it won't really be an issue, but after that, the light in that fruiting chamber will be way and way too dim anyway, so you'll probably have to move it to a spot close to a window with sufficient humidity and avoid dry heat (radiator!)

You need to get it out of that mason jar it appears to be in for starters, and into something that can freely drain away. It's probably still trying to acclimate itself, i wouldn't mess with it too much.

update, about 30 mins after i watered her she perked up. i think she was thirsty. im going to monitor her, im considering building a semi humidi-tent over her using seran wrap? its a little cold where im at but i keep the heat on about 72 although id venture to say the room shes in drops to the high 60s. i also have wbs jars colonizing in the same room. i tried using a heating blanket under them but its barely warming up, its old and i think its broken lol. the wbs are doing nicely though

I've never grown salvia, unfortunately...but i've read enough threads to know that the humidity tent would probably be a grand idea.

errr, i really couldn't be certain with salvia. but since no one else is chiming in i'd say if the leaves are looking sad (yellow/brown/slimy/black/whatever) then yes cut them off so younger healthy stuff will grow stronger. If they look healthy and green leave them alone and they will bounce back soon enough.

Well if I were in your shoes, I would cut any bigger leaves off in hope for better root development and future leaf output or whatever.
But don't hate me if I'm wrong. This is just what I would do with most plants in general if I was trying to establish a rooted cutting.
Good luck man, best wishes for her.

It's been a long time since I grew salvia and I was not successful with it ultimately, but if I'm remembering right it sometimes drops and regrows leaves in response to drastic humidity change. I can't see the sense in removing leaves that are not dead though, isn't that just reducing its food production capacity?

that was my thought process as well, but i have heard of trimming leaves so the energy it uses is for new leaves and not old, dieing leaves. i have it in a humidity tent i made. its perked up from yesterday since i watered it. in another day or so im going to water it again. i cant see salvia being too hard to grow really, plants dont seem to hard but i could be wrong. just when i thought mushies were difficult, i realize they are very easy ahahaha

A friend of mine grows Salvia in his garden, it has taken over. It does react very badly to environmental changes. Keeping it humid is nice but if you move it the leaves will drop and regrow again, slowly. When winter hits he harvests all the leaves and in sprint it grows back with the vengeance.

You will need to keep it until it turns around. Moving it again to a non humid environment will cause it to get shocked again, so be careful.

im gonna keep her in the humidity chamber for a good while, my house is fairly dry now.(i can feel my nose drying out) hopefully once shes rooted and has a few leaves shell be more stable and can survive outside of it. it gets fairly humid around here in the spring/summer

Salvia D.

Friends garden, this is only a small portion of it. Like i said this stuff is like a weed and unkept it will overgrow the garden. It dies back in winter and comes back in spring with the vengeance, but this winter it kept growing.
