Bacteria Contaminated tops of PF jars
    #19317685 - 12/23/13 06:36 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Ok... So if ALL of my jars are contaminating with bacteria.... But always on the top... What could be the reason for this? I take the jars out while their still hot and leave the tin foil on until inoculation. Is that bad?

I thought contaminated inoculant... But the mycelia that I inject colonized the bottom 1/2 to 3/4 of the jars.... The bacteria is always at the top

I also have control PF jars that have basically grain lids... With silicone ports and a SFD. They seem to be doing fine?!?!

This is a no-no. Leave them in your pressure cooker overnight or at the very least let them come down to room temp.

Your going wrong somewhere...IME cakes dont get bacteria comtams that often, there too dry. Usually when it does happen its from the syringe/too much juice/ not properly sterilized.make sure your starti g the time when the water begins to boil

I PC for 60min timer starting when the cooker goes above atmospheric

Also I do use a dry vermiculite barrier but when I checked it, it seemed wet some how...

Also I built a 4x2 flow hood but haven't fully confirmed it works yet :/ still need to do agar

Am I over cooking them? I know people boil in an un covered pot so I don't see that as the issue

You need to leave them in the PC till around the hour you're going to inoc. If you're bringing out your PC'd jars while they are hot and now exposed you're just making an open invitation for bacterial contaminates to start producing in the heat and moisture sitting under the foil and lid where you're experiencing the issue.

I see... So should I take off the foil right away? Let them cool in front of the flow hood?

How then do people just boil PF jars?

just take the foil off and put them on a shelf or in your sab or anywhere till you inoculate just don't toss them around too much and disturb your verm barrier
