Question for Gardening Lovers!
    #19316402 - 12/23/13 02:17 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Hey everyone,

First post in this forum; someone suggested I check it out since I may be looking for a new hobby/project/something I like to do.

I'm just curious....why do you guys grow? This question doesn't pertain specifically to cacti (even though that's what I'd probably grow), but any plant at all. Is it all for psychedelic purposes, out of admiration for the Earth, or something else?

And also: how did you guys first get into this hobby? Or in other words, how would you suggest I first start?

Thanks in advance for answering this noob's questions. I'm really 100% new to growing anything, but its something I have a lot of interest in.

Nice thread idea.

How did I get into growing entheo/ethnoboatnicals? Long story but basically I woke up several years ago to the fact that the food we put into our bodies is extremely important to our wellbeing, so I started cooking and eating organic local foods and all that. I decided to study horticulture and got into psychedelics in my free time.

My first step in growing these plants myself came when I got some Salvia divinorum cuttings and fresh leaves. I chewed a massive quid and met my tribal family from the Amazon, and they told me to "lead the people back to plants" by growing/distributing (legal) entheogens and other mildly consciousness altering plants. I had great success growing Salvia, huge healthy plants, and felt like the reason mine looked so much better than a lot of pics I'd seen on the internet was because I was 'listening' to what the plant needed. Now I have other plants like Ephedra sinica, Heimia salicifolia, Trichocereus bridgesii, Silene capensis, Ipomoea carnea etc. I LOVE this hobby.

That's possibly a long winded hippie drivel kind of explanation, but that's my story.

Not at all; I really appreciated your post

Over the past year or two, I have become very conscientious about what I put in my body. With all of these processed foods being sold to everyone, I really want to know exactly what I'm eating/smoking/etc and that it's healthy for me.

I'm also really interested in "mildly consciousness altering plants" too. That's why I thought growing would be a great idea, so I can experiment with all these herbs and so forth that aren't usually considered well-known drugs.

Thanks for the reply!

Sure thing, good luck with your future gardening projects. Have you thought about growing medicinal herbs and veggies btw? I'm starting to get into perennial veggies/fruit and herbs for making tinctures etc.

I grow cacti and various plants with cacti being my love. I grow for various reasons but mainly to see these tiny little creatures flourish under my care. I will, however, take littles bites here and there of my kratom and khat. I got other babies on the horizon.

I definitely have thought about herbs, not so much veggies...are medicinal veggies even a thing? Sounds real interesting.

I've done lots of research on khat (partly for a project I did in the past), but I'm very interested in growing this plant!

See, this is what I'm talking about. There's so many useful plants that we can grow for medicinal/personal usage. I'm pretty sure I made up my mind about this new hobby!

Aciddreamer, do you grow all your plants outside? Is that definitely needed?

Whoops I meant medicinal herbs and veggies as seperate ideas. But sure veggie are medicinal too

I grow all my plants outside because I have a huge yard and a great growing climate. Some herbs do well in windowboxes and it looks like lots of people have success with kratom, Salvia etc being grown indoors. I just prefer doing it outside and I feel like it makes my plants healthier

I grow as a hobby
Gets me more in touch with the plants
Feel more connected... Appreciate them... Actually bond

I enjoy the experience, challenge, beauty....  The fact not many people do it

Just fun!

Peace

I have a lot of house plants, i don't think a room looks right without plants. I grew weed because i liked weed. I grew veggies because home grown food tastes so much better. I drink a lot of herbal teas recently so i'm going to grow some herbs next year.
I have a fascination for things that are interesting and different so i can't resist cool things when i'm at the garden centre, i just like to look at them. Same goes with flowers, they make me happy and they have the same effect on people around me.

Some perpetual spinach grown in a trough or some radishes are quick easy rewarding veggies, radishes can grow in 3 weeks. Potatos grown in good rich compost are probably my favorites.

I'm into growing life, in all aspects. I feel all living things share energy, including plants. I like to watch their daily progress and how they are actually effected by the environment around them. And I mean as far as the energy among the people around them. I've done a little research on scientists doing studies on how plants are effected by things like yelling, angry music, no music, fighting, complimenting etc. and they have proven to be effected accordingly. So, in a way, knowing this kinda keeps me in check ya know. It reminds me that we all have an impact on each other whether we realize it or not.
As far as you starting out, I would start with some easy house plants to get the vibe going then whatever you are interested in, do it hardcore.
because there is a difference between GROWING a plant and just surviving a plant.
Good luck and have fun.
