Sporeless Blue Oyster Strain
    #19310720 - 12/22/13 06:26 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Hey everyone. Been a little while since posting in here but I've been keeping mighty busy.
So a little background info.
I decided to take a clone from a shop bought oyster mushroom a while back. I thought that all of them had been unsuccessful (for whatever reason the little buggers did not want to clone) but i did find 2 plates that were nice and fluffy and fully colonized.

So, unsure if they were definitely oysters or some other invader, I decided to proceed and make grain spawn etc etc.

Now the little fellas fruit like champs. Nice strong clusters with moderately sized fruit bodies. Lots of flavor and usually a decent hit of color too. The interesting thing is that they do not drop ANY spores.

I initially suspected I may have picked them too early so i decided to let some mature right through until they were essentially rotting. Still not a single spore.

So I took a heap of very mature caps and laid them out on black card. Initially I noticed patterns on the card but it turned out to just be condensation grouping where the oils on my hands had touched the card. Once it evaporated there was NOTHING left over

SO I'm quite happy that I now have a sporeless strain

The only thing that I am a little puzzled about is how to keep the strain alive and fresh? If i keep taking clones from subsequent flushes will the mycelium eventually get old? Or does the new clone essentially represent a "new" transfer and "refresh" the strain?

Any input would be greatly appreciated. And people are also welcome to PM if they may wish to trade etc.

Cheers everyone

If it still performs well, save it on a master culture slant.  This way, for years to come you can still have the same strain at the same level of cellular age.

Yeh slants are definitely being taken once this lot of agar is sorted out.
i never bothered taking slants of it first time around simply because it did not seem like anything special/

DO you personally know of any ways that you can further propagate the culture later on down the track?
Or would you effectively need to try and hybridize it with a sporulating strain and then try and isolate another sporeless strain from that?
Im sure there must be a way that commercial places further propagate their sporeless varieties besides slants.

Cheers for the input though. It's appreciated.

PMed you. Would love to trade a plate if you have any cultures of lions mane or any other edible species by any chance.
Trying to build myself a mushroom culture library of sorts haha
