Never wash mushrooms. Brush or rub them to remove debris before cooking. Portobellos are not grown on poo, a substance which provokes the need to change a baby's diaper.
They're grown on cased, composted manure. RR

No they are grown on heavily processed, 'artificial' substrates. If there is any horse manure in there, then it is thoroughly composted and aged. And it's all been pasteurized and sterilized, thus killing all the micro organisms that would make manure 'nasty'. Also, horse 'poopy' is probably the least harmful and disgusting ingredient during most food production, lol.
EDIT: yeah,

Correct. They need microorganisms to promote fruiting, especially in the casing layer. However, some growers sterilize certain components of the substrate. But that's beside the point, what I was trying to say that harmful organisms in the manure are killed during the preparation.

Yeah I live near a "portobello's factory" and I can confirm they use manure mixed with hay, because they hand out huge amounts of used substrate for the people who want to use it for compost or similar. Sadly they pausterize it before handing it out, even if some shrooms are still able to grow when you use it in your garden.
