Calcium hydroxide confusion!
    #19314698 - 12/23/13 04:33 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Hi All, and seasons greetings, etc...

I am trying to get well stocked for getting back into mycology when I move house, next month, and am a little confused about what hydrated lime to buy here in the UK (limited supplies to be found).

I have found a chemical company who seem reasonably priced, and who have provided the following product information;

Calcium Hydroxide Ca(OH)2:  >98.7%

Calcium Carbonate CaCO3: <0.55%

Magnesium Oxide MgO: <0.23%

Iron Oxide Fe2O3: <0.03%

Aluminium Oxide Al2O3: <0.04%

Silica SiO2: <0.36%

Manganese Mn: <0.36%

Sulphur S: <122ppm

Lead Pb: <0.01%

Arsenic As: <2ppm

Free Moisture: <0.53%

Available Lime (as Ca(OH)2): >97.06%

Neutralisation Value (as CaO): 74.46%

It also comments on its use being from building related, through to food grade, and in aquariums.  It also states a low toxicity.

I have compared it with the example posted on this forum ( https://files.shroomery.org/files/06-29/352394956-hydrated_lime_label.jpg ), and am unclear whether the extra 4% purity is a problem, I see the magnesium level is lower, and the CaO is different, and does all the other trace stuff in the UK lime hinder its use in mycology?

If you could share your opinions on this, I would most appreciate it

It will be fine with that purity.
