Trying to spend wise on spores.

So Im planning on using my birthday money from christmas to buy some spores for my buddies.
But I dont usually get much(small family). Is there a way to get like 8 syringes for 50$?
And does anyone have a recommendation on species? Ive been broke as hell and my buddies are all psyched up to try mycology from seeing how well Ive done as a newbie. I dont think theyll do too bad but I want a really tough species so they dont get discouraged by contams on their first try.
Ive had a ton of fun with this hobby so far and would love to get my friends into mycology. So if anyone can help me out Id appreciate it.
Oh and Happy Holidays to all my friends in the shroomery It was a rough start but Ive settled in. You guys rule

A cubes a cube, but most will tell you to start with GT. Pretty much all cubes except Penis Envy will be good for a beginner.

Just get 1 or 2 of them....not 8.....then stretch those 1 or 2 syringes.
It only takes a few drops of spore solution per hole/jar.
You can make 1 syringe knock up 30-40 cakes no problem.

I think you mean variety, not species.....and if talking about P.Cubensis, cubes are cubes.
Pick one and go for it.
If doing cakes, stay away from PE...save that for bulk as it performs much better.

It performs really shitty on brf cakes.

Exactly, unless you can isolate some good mycelium using multi spore inoculation is really risky. Risky in a sense that this strain is prone to mutants and other issues. Don't get me wrong, this strain is amazingly potent, just not too good to start from spores.

So if im hitting agar and grains I should be able to try out a penis envy? Im switching to petris for my agar so I can try getting a good strain.
So If they start out with cakes any cube should be fine and I only need like 2 for 8 people to start?

If you want to work with agar make sure you have a very sterile glove box or flow hood. 2 syringes is plenty. oh, going to need a PC for them grains as well.

Yeah Ive been doing well In my glovebox. Ive already got 2 jars of grain with reishi wedges in them. 10 species so far and no contams to my knowledge.
Not bad for my first time on agar. My first one (reishi) was almost embarrassing. Reishis are tough as hell.

A SAB(Still Air Box) is better for this hobby than a glove box.
The gloves should be attached to you and not the box, so you can easily move your arms in and out of the box to flame sterilize your tools.
Furthermore the SAB/GB does not have to be sterile(it would actually be impossible to sterilize it and keep it sterile), or even sanitary for that matter, that is not the point.
The point is to create a still air draft free environment. Because if there is no air movement, nothing can blow on your work.
The tools jars and dishes that go inside it should be sanitary, and the scalpels and needles should be flame sterilize between each jar or transfer(this is the only part that requires sterility).

Wow didnt even notice that I put glovebox I have a SAB. And its actually pretty small. I rub everything down with alcohol and spray like hell and let it sit for an hour and its worked wonders for me

Im not sure if you think im a noob or what, but I know what im talking about... If you make your "SAB" like I did you can either use the attached gloves or use your own gloves like a traditional glove box

Yup, learned this 4 years ago when I started. Which is why I also spray down the inside of the box. Any particles that become airborn while I move my hands in/pout have a chance of getting stuck on the soapy water on the wall and not falling down on my jars or petri dishes when I open them.

Question:
If you are currently being successful with this hobby then that means you should have plenty of free spores.
Why not just buy 8 empty syringes and fill them up with your own spores for your friends?

Yeah I spray mine down hardcore before I let it sit. Then give it a spray inside and a spray down in front of the opening. That way my gloves move through spray filled air upon entry. Seems to work well so far.

I have edibles and medicinals. They require live cultures and Im still in grain/agar phase.
They also only seem to be interested in active species and I dont have any

Have you tried to look into any of the free spore rings? Or buy one print and empty syringes.
You can make 5-10 syringes from one print easily.

Dude. Get the sporeworks stocking stuffer. You'll get like 5-9 syringes and some prints for $39, along with other goodies. Just let them know what you don't want. IE "no edibles please"
