Too much fae for colonizing grain
    #19313841 - 12/22/13 09:46 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Greetings everyone. It's been a week and a half since I inoculated some corn grain spawn, and I've yet to see any mycelium growth. I'm wondering if I'm giving the jars too much FAE, causing the corn to dry. I used some jar lids previously used for pf tek that have 4 small holes with a tyvek layer on top. The corn was soaked for 24 hours then boiled for 45min and air dried for 30min before pc'd for an hour as per Gotlib's tek. I know it's still too early to tell, but has anyone ever had their grain dry out from too much FAE?

IME corn takes a long time for germination. 2 weeks is not even unheard of for rye or WBS, 3 could be what your looking at for corn. Also it would be GE (Gas exchange( in your jar not FAE (Fresh air exchange).

^^^ This worries me. 90 min is the standard for sterilization at 15 psi for grains like rye or WBS, but with corns high endospore count and large grain size I would want to go for no less than 2 hours. I would start some new jars, with a better spawn than corn, as those are likely to show bacterial contams IMO.
