Are there noticeable differences in the first two flushes with using a 3 in sub instead of a 4 in?

I agree with chronicr. if you're making a tray or a mono than no reason to go past 3 in my experience. that's just my opinion, I've heard people swear by 5 inches, I've done both and it seems like same results to me.

Good info. If I was gonna do 80/20 poo/Vern. I would need a total of 15 qts in my tub to get 3 in. So I was doing 5qts spawn 8qts poo an 2qts Vern. Is adding 1/2qt of gypsum too much?

that should be great. and boost your yield a bit.i just sprinkle it over everything last kinda like sprinkles on an ice cream cone. if you can use a couple more spawn jars, it'll speed things up. if you can't, no worries you should be fine. good luck

IMO the only benefit to a sub over 3 inches would be more water content, which I find means you can go longer before needing to dunk or rehydrate. Most of my 3 inch subs need rehydrating after the third flush, while with a 4 inch sub sometimes they don't need to be dunked period. All things considered I like a sub depth of 3-3.5 inches for my 66 quart tubs, while going as low as 2.5 for my smaller mini monos. The mini monos are easy to dunk and thus is not as much of a PITA, while saving on spawn and sub costs.

I've tried tubs at 5, 4 and 3 inch substrate depths. My preferred depth is 3 inches. This is because I don't really see any difference in the depths other than 3 inches colonizes quicker. Quicker colonization is a total win for me.
