Keeping brf cakes w/ localized contamination during incubation
    #19313708 - 12/22/13 09:09 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Searching the forums seems to suggest that, at least with Trich, viable 'shrooms can still be obtained from colonized substrates that have an isolated patch of contamination:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/4664196#4664196 ; =(possible but risk to your grow space)
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/14737345#14737345 ; =(possible with sterile removal of contam; risk to grow space)

There are others, but in summary it's possible but risky. I'm adding this post because of difference in circumstances:

I have a brf cake with an innoculant borne contaminant ~3mm x 3mm that's a bright brown color and tinged condensation near it orange, however, it is otherwise encased by mycelium and appears to have stopped growing (the 'shroom laid the smack down on it). It's so tiny that the only way I could see it is by the white that grew around it.

It is not odd colored verm, I've seen this beastie before.

Q: Provided the cake shows no further contamination, would it be possible to save it by cutting out the bad spot with a sterile tool post birth & pre dunk? The logic being a) the mycelium has isolated it, b) by excising it I'll be able to see (kind of) if it's gone into the cake and just get tossed, and c) the fruits are for private use only.

I appreciate all replies, but am most interested in experiences where someone has actually done this and the result.

Thanks! I hope I searched through the archive thoroughly enough to not get trounced.
