Steel wool instead of polyfil
    #19313002 - 12/22/13 06:18 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

I can find it pretty cheap here, I don't know if it's inexpensive everywhere but I know where to get it.

So I heard it's one of the options. Is it pretty much the same, adjust it until it's as loose as you like it?

I also heard of people using "Steropore" (like a bandage) but I want to explore my options because a big bag of polyfil, even if it can be crunched down, is still one more big bag for my grow in a small place, and I like how steel wool could be reused.

Really don't want to use polyfil, would rather use nothing, but steel wool seems a worthy option just in case.

Well, I know people say there isn't anything wrong with using it, and it's cheap and easy to get, I personally don't want something more or less disposable, or subject to getting wet and gross

that, and in the long run the steel wool just doesn't really ever die, even if it costs more up front (maybe by a considerable lot, but I can get it quite cheap)

so the thought is maybe it's better but also I don't want to keep buying the shit, not when I can just hit up stores that sell steel wool, and keep using it

Also environmental wise, it not only ends in a land fil its not super natural either, being a plastic derivative I think

Rather deal with that then wet and rusty.  Go to a dumpster and find a pillow or stuffed animal if you wanna keep it out (at least for a little while) of a land fill.

I steal mine from my girlfriends pillows on the sneak.  :ninjalike:

Well I don't think that there are many people out there who have done this so if you want to know how well it works all you can do is try it. Report back with your findings.

I would imagine one nice thing about steel wool is that there are at least a few types, maybe I could find just the right one.

I don't know that the stuff rusts, a lot of it is stainless anymore I think

This.

Or just use polyfill like everyone else since it's tested and proven.

1. it's cheap and easy to get, right.
2. you should get 100% polyester polyfill.
3. 100% polyester polyfill doesn't get "wet and gross," when it gets wet all you have to do is give it a squeeze and quick shake and you have dry polyfill to work with.

I promise, polyfill is painfully easy to work with and adjustments can be made in seconds if you find your tub is not dialed in.

Get polyfill, you won't look back.

Why is there constant threads asking about polyfill alternatives. It's not like it's super expensive or really hard to find or something :wtf:

It should do a good job keeping bugs out.  Unfortunately, it won't stop bacteria and mold.

Hmmm.... this might be a good enough reason to forget steel wool, not completely uselss but not much use either

I think maybe I will just use polyfill. It doesn't seem as if there's but one other method that I have heard of besides polyfil because I hear EZ felt or filter patches don't work for monotubs

some people mentioned steropore bandages? I guess if polyfil can be reused and doesn't do like cotton, I should be okay, but I am surprised more people don't want polyfil alternatives

Steel wool will definitely rust.  I know for sure.  I use them to clean my bike rims...left in the barn wet for a few days, and they're orange and crumbly.
If they made it from stainless, it would be much more expensive, and still rust....even stainless would rust if left in conditions that humid for that long.

really? I heard Stainless doesn't rust, but maybe just not easily

I am going to go with the more pricey but awesome method of using polyfill in a pvc tube (or similar) with soffit vents attached.

Go to a Boatyard. They have Brass wool and some other different kinds if that's what your looking for.

Steel wool has some drawbacks, it rust, it is oiled, and is extremely flammable.

Find a hypo-allergenic pillow somewhere it probably has poly-fil inside.  Even if you don't want to pay for the stuff it isn't hard to find.

Don't reinvent the wheel.  Poly is used for a reason.

Quality Stainless will rust If it is gotten "dirty", but the threads of wool will be more prone to rusting than a stainless steel plate.  Stainless steel wool should last a very long time even with daily service.

Polyfill when loose in the top holes will keep out about as many spores and bacteria as loose packed steel wool.  Both when loose as needed in a monotub will not do any mechanical filtration of the air.

Steel is not flammable.  Oil is.  Soaking in a hot water bath with some soap will get that right off.  Im not sure why I needed to even address that lol

I think that stainless could work, and could work well.  I would not get less than stainless however.  The standard "brillo" pads rust to dust in a matter of weeks.

Do tell us if/what you find.
