I've been working on getting a clone. Can never seem to get anything that looks much like mycelium. The piece will fuzz up but then what grows on the agar doesn't look like mycelium, and eventually turns very dark brown like the chaga itself. Don't know if it's a contam or what but it's the same every time I try. Interested to see pics as well.

This is a clone that appears clean. I used very fresh inner sclerotium. Plann is to spawn to grain then to four inch wooden dowels to inoculate live birch trees with. On mypa btw.

I just looked at my last transfer again, it's hard to see the top through my mason jar lid but it might actually be white mycelium, just looks strange from underneath. Definitely not that thick either.
How long did it take to grow that much AV?

Thank`s Amanita ,
I tried to clone from a dried fruitbody.....looks very strange , like Pleurotus dryinus mycelium building spores...or even a mold ?

That's kind of similar to what I'm getting.

Don't you hate when you're eating and you get a beard or moustache hair in your teeth? Sometimes when I'm eating an apple a damned hair will get wedged between two of my lower teeth and really get stuck in there. Sorry for the derail, but I have no one in my life to share beard problems with.

That's a beauty for sure. I'm actually a commercial chaga harvester and run across dried fruitbodies quite frequently. Usually around July I will start seeing fresh ones popping out too.
As someone who harvests a great deal of this wonderful fungus I think alot about sustainability and how I can do my part to give back to the woods that give so much to me and my family. I would be happy to offer dried fruitbodies to anyone who has the desire/ability to grow mycelium from them. I would even be open to trying to get some spore prints this summer too, although it may be tricky.
Anyway, it's great to see people experimenting with cultivation and I wish you the best of luck and hope I can be of some assistance to you.

sustainable cultivation of a parasitic species is a bit dubious imo. Birch is a fast growing "trash" tree but your still not doing it any favors by infecting it with chaga
There has been a bit of a gold rush for chaga here in VT. Its the latest health fad. The valleys are all picked clean ya got to get up into the hills to find big ones.
Nice mushroom AV. Is that your forager friend? Looks rugged enough

Does you guys' turn brown with age? I read it's supposed to so I'm pretty sure I've got a clean culture here.

Kind of a weird little explosion of mycelium right around where I cut the wedge, but I'm fairly sure it's not contamination, I used a brand new scalpel blade.

I put that wedge in some millet. Dunno where the wedge went (after the post-inoculation shake) but it's SO freakin' slow, I don't wanna shake the jar again till I see some kinda growth.

I know this is an old thread but I have some pictures of Chaga from a culture I got off ebay that is supposed to be Chaga and figured it would fit in here better than starting my own thread. This is my first post on this forum and I know bringing old posts is usually frowned upon but this was where I found pictures of Chaga that looked like what I have so thought I'd add to it.
The Culture I got was contaminated but there was some spots that I think MIGHT be the Chaga.

Here is one of the tan spots transferred to a fresh plate.

and a close up picture of the mycelium.

I'm not positive this is really Chaga since I had to clean it up from a contaminated syringe but it does look similar to some of the other pictures in this thread and the culture from ebay was supposed to be Chaga.
It started out an off white color but soon changed to the tan or brown color shown in these pictures.
