So this was my first time attempting to grow shroomies. I'll give you the basics. Used brf tek. Using a sgfc. Got six cakes in that. Now into week two of them being in there. All of them are pinning but one cake has a cluster that seems to.be ready to pick. I'm not to sure. What do you guys think?

Pick when veil is 2/3rds off or just fell off for max potency. Or you can wait till the spores drop and their weight goes up. It's up to you.

It is not possible to have too much humidity.
100% is as good as it gets.

fair enough pal, like i said im no master , i do find dropping the humidity to like 95percent gives me bigger and more healthier looking shrooms tho, its all about prefence init i like mine to be pure white with nice orange caps,
By the looks off your pics you know what your doing better than me so superkush89 ignore me and listen if notahacker420 has something to say lol

what size jars did you use, that last pic, the cake looks really flat? You might be lucky to get a second flush out of that before the mycelium eats it all....

I mist and fan about six times a day. I used 1/2 pint jars. I did have to smash them open because even though I used wide mouth jars they weren't tapered. That was the only real problem I ran into with this little project. I guess I got lucky. My concern was that my babies were shorties but the caps seemed to have opened already. I read you were supposed to pick it when the cap starts to test . I had no idea that in a matter of a day or two after pinning that a huge cluster fuck would appear and the caps seem to have ripped already

They look too wet to me.

In my experience you don't need to mist when using a nice layer of perlite.

I had just mist them before taking the pic. And I thought my shrooms were gonna look like yours, long and skinny but if you guys say they look fine then ill roll with it. I have a food dehydrator ready to dry these bad boys

This makes no sense.....are you putting a layer of perlite on your cakes?
We do not mist for humidity, we mist to replace lost moisture in the cakes.
We then fan out the chamber to promote evaporation of water off the cakes we just misted.
This helps re-humidify the chamber after fanning, and is also the #1 pinning trigger.

I never misted. I think misting cakes is a bad idea. I dont even coat the cakes with verm. Just dunk them before going into fruiting chamber that has 2 inches of perlite. It is all about making the cakes correctly, and fruiting temperature temp and humidity. Original Poster is way to wet. His fruits are water logged and it is stunting the growth. Slow the mist down or cut it completely.
Dunk cakes in sterilized by boiling, then cooled covered, betweeen flushes and that is all you need to replace moisture.

These pics are from about 10 years ago. Stone age i guess =)

yes, thats some old ass styles you got bro, misting the cakes is a great idea and it was ten years ago, 4 inches of perlite is better then 2, no need to sterilize your dunk water fruiting isn't a sterile process. just have to say it for the sake of the boards lol! but i can dig the stuck on old school stuff, if it works for ya it works for ya

I am old school and I grew cakes for many years on end experimenting many ways. I am long retired now but all in all, the key things i found where this...
Use good quality brown rice. Get whole grain and coffee grind it yourself. Do not use pre ground brown rice. Make and mix your cakes properly. Dry mix the ingredriants first then add water. Don't roll the cake in verm or anything else. Waste of time Dunk the cakes in water before the first flush and between every other flush. DONT MIST! You are just adding water weight to mushrooms and making friendly environment for bacteria to grow on the fruits. The humidity has to be perfect. The mushrooms get water from the humidity, it is key.

Mixing the water with the verm, and then adding the brf will make it coat the verm better.
Quote:

No, it's not a waste of time.
The verm holds moisture, and creates a microclimate for pin formation on all sides of the cake.
It's just like adding a casing layer to bulk....it is not needed, but it can be beneficial....and with cakes in a SGFC it certainly is beneficial.

This is terrible advice.
With the proper amount of FAE the cakes will dry out without misting them to replace the lost moisture.
Plus evaporation off the cakes/substrate is a main pinning trigger....evaporation of water off the cakes can only happen if we mist them, then fan out the chamber.
Your old school methods suck bro(no offense to you)....times have changed.....we can get better results nowadays.
Quote:
baraka said: The humidity has to be perfect. The mushrooms get water from the humidity, it is key.
No they don't, they get water from the moisture in the cakes.......
New growers need to focus less on humidity and more on proper FAE.
With lots of FAE comes evaporation, which in turn creates humidity.
Lots of FAE = Lots of humidity.
But the cakes will dry out with lots of FAE unless we mist them to replace the lost moisture.
Please stop giving advice.
