Moving away from technology

During one of my limited number of trips, one thing that really struck me hard was that I needed to ween myself off of technology. There were many reasons which presented themselves, such as:
1) The time consumption and addictive qualities of most video games 2) The fact that at the end of the day, nothing is really gained 3) People like Snowden and Manning have demonstrated exactly how intrusive the gvt is online 4) The more we merge with technology, the more distant we move from our true selves
This is also a big one: the fact that nothing new is discovered. Even if your WoW character reaches max lvl, you're still following the same path millions of others already have.
Since I reached this conclusion, about a year ago, I've made significant changes in my life. For one, I completely quit playing just about all video games, except one that I stick to for its community. I've also decided I want to avoid ever again carrying a cell phone.
My clarity of mind is better than it has been in years.
Thoughts?

I've suspected similar things

Just that it's pretty ironic you posted this on an online forum.

I like tech. I'd like to fast forward to a future where brain machines replace drugs, and we'll jack into 3hrs of a peak acid trip and meditate in a holodeck VR together .
-------------------- Everything is better than it was the last time. I'm good. If we could look into each others hearts, and understand the unique challenges each of us faces, I think we would treat each other much more gently, with more love, patience, tolerance, and care. It takes a lot of courage to go out there and radiate your essence. I know you scared, you should ask us if we scared too. If you was there, and we just knew you cared too.

Haha, yes, of course I see the irony that this topic is in and of itself. However, note that the topic is called 'moving away...' rather than having moved away completely.
The internet is amazingly resourceful, and I'm thankful for it for many reasons, but I also believe that technology is going to continue to be more and more pervasive as time goes on.
Now let's get into some wild territory. The singularity. If there comes a day where man and machine become one, or at the very least, implants become the new Ipod, what affect does that have on our relation to ourselves? This kind of reality doesn't seem too far away, in my eyes.

I think that technology has it's pros and cons for us.
I feel much more at peace and present after a few days in the bush with no technology (or limited usage). Can't deny that.
And how about this trend of people becoming addicted to smartphones? In any uncomfortable/boring situation you can just pick up your phone and enter a different world. I'm thinking this is having a pretty negative effect on people's attention span and ability to focus

Interesting topic, devicat.
In my opinion, embracing technology isn't necessarily a bad move for the spiritual seeker, but I think it can have potential pitfalls. There's a sort of numbing effect that accompanies instant access to information and to other people. Something that distracts the attention and gets in the way of quiet contemplation.
Before TV, listeners to radio had to use their imaginations to appreciate the radio experience. They had to "imagine." Visualize. Fantasize. Today, with TV, none of that is required. Turn it on, shut off your brain, veg out.
But as others have pointed out above, it's a mixed bag.
No internet = no Shroomery = no "spirituality and mysticism forum" = no discussions like this one -- discussions accessible to anyone with a computer, anytime, any place.
