I hope this is the correct board to post this in, if not I will gladly move it to the correct one. Hello everyone, I've decided to start coming up with innovative teks for those of us that don't have the funding or transportation to acquire the necessary materials needed for some of the well known and respected teks. This first venture started about a week ago when I wanted to make a SGFC to fruit my casing. I had no perlite and my tub was only 6"x13 3/4"x10 1/2" in volume.
1. Drill the mandatory 1/4" holes 2" apart on all 6 sides of tub. 2. Gather about a gallon small-medium sized decorative lava rocks and rinse them thoroughly in a strainer.
 3. Line a large 2" deep baking sheet with aluminum foil and spread the rocks in it evenly. 4. Bake them at 450°F for an hour. 5. Take em out and let em cool for a couple hours. 6. Dump them in a large bowl big enough to hold them with some head room. 7. Boil some filtered water on the stove. 8. As soon as the water starts boiling, take it off and pour it on the rocks enough so that they are all covered. (To allow them to soak up as much water as possible) 9. Let them sit until they are cool to the touch. 10. Grab handfuls at a time and hold them over the bowl to drain a little (5-6 seconds) then fill the bottom of the tub up about 1.5" with the rocks, moving them around to make it as even as possible. 11. Take a couple cups medium grade vermiculite and hydrate it to field capacity. (If you squeeze it hard several drops will come out) 12. Add a couple handfuls over top of the lava rocks and spread it out to make it a more even surface. (not too much verm cause you don't want to block anything up. Refer to my picture) 13. Now you are ready to birth your cakes or casings!

If anyone has ANY questions or suggestions I would love to hear them. This PMSGFC works wonders, and if you want proof just ask. Also, if anybody wants me to try and make something just shoot me a message. Good luck and I'll talk to you guys later.

As you wish The verm is barely damp and there is a negligible amount in there. It's purpose is to increase the RH just a bit.

Just order some perlite... If you did it because you had to get something going in a hurry... that's cool. But verm will eventually get yuckies on it. It just sits there at field capacity and does nothing but make a more level surface?
The lava rock on its own will work more efficiently. Not worth using the verm to make a level surface. I used to use lava rock in a PMP for years and never had an issue with it.
