Does anyone here actually take their Adderall like prescribed?
    #19309190 - 12/21/13 07:24 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Oh Addy... my first hard drug.

I know 90% of us have ADHD and that the other 10% are just running their doctor for Dexedrine spansules, so... lets hear it :strokebeard:

I personally don't find it to have any conventional recreational value but nor do I take it as prescribed. I take it on probably half of the days on any given month, but I find that when I'm taking it faithfully, I'm super productive and almost completely lose interest in recreational drugs. Is it like that for anyone else?

Now if I were scripted 90 Norco a month, I'm sure I'd have the opposite medication noncompliance problem :datass:

You're right, in my experience. It's weird for me to think about, because I love stims so much and I've always imagined that if I ever got scripted one I would always run out within a week, but I guess it makes sense. Even meth users generally burn out after a while and take a break for a few days before going on another binge. It's basically impossible to take a stimulant every single day. All the people I know who have been prescribed adderall/vyvanse/ritalin for a number of years have gotten tired of taking it daily and now only take it when they have to get a big project done, but when they do it they take a lot, like 4-6x their prescribed dosage.

That's interesting, Morrow. Thanks for your input and perspective!

I could totally see myself slipping into that pattern, although I can't realistically see me ever more than doubling my dosage. Even just doubling it would keep me up for at least a couple days.

It's funny though; since I hardly ever take it nowadays, even a single 10mg IR Adderall will have me fairly "zoned", although 2 by 20 is my M.O. for a super productive 8 hours on my ass

I miss adderall. It made me feel like a normal person. Helps me focus, and gives me social grace somehow.

Have you considered that ADHD might just be extreme stress?

I got maybe 95% of adhd symptoms if I google adhd, and I was once at the psychiatrist who said I likely got adhd randomly

I always delay everything I do, do 10 things at once never finish one, find 10 excuses to delay everything I do, lose my keys/creditcard/socks the past 30 years of my life everyday almost
and can only concentrate on reading 5mins at a time max usually

but it wasnt always as bad as now, seems I am very sensitive to noise i.e.

the system doesnt always know best
I have never been able to read a full book yet, never made it past 1/4th of it in high school/uni, had to reread 100 times, can only remember if I read it 100 times, seems I only got a long term memory, no short term
can read 10 pages and remember 5-10% often

after meditating it all improved :-)
after eating healthy it all improved too

it is not gone, and my dad got all the same issues, but it has been reduced a small bit

when I smoked weed I would remember 100% of what I read, but without weed (never smoked weed till 25 or so) I would remember 10-20% max of 5-10 pages

without noise where I live I can concentrate almost like everybody else it seems
but the slighest noise makes me completely unable to read even 5 pages and remember more than a few lines of them

then there is the issue of regular sleep too, Ive allways been doing everything last second the whole night
if I sleep like everybody else did I might be able to remember my things
that is stress too

Same here. Problem for me is, I honestly don't have any problems focusing when I'm sober. I get my schoolwork and so forth done with no problem. I have a one-track mind. In fact I sometimes feel hyperfocused on that sort of thing to the point of being distracted from social reality. Adderall and similar stimulants- in their prescribed dosages- wake me up to social reality: they makes me talkative, they make me want to go out and be lively and exercise and party and engage in activities. The thing is, they don't prescribe stimulants for problems like mine. They say people like me are "depressed" and give us things like SSRIs and SNRIs, which help a little bit, but they don't do the same thing. I can't really say I'm mad because honestly, I think taking drugs in an attempt to solve problems of this type is an ultimately doomed plan, for reasons mostly due to homeostatic mechanisms.

I hear ya...

I've taken adderall and vyvanse a few times over the years just the few times I've come across people that have a script and are willing to sell a few of them....And holy shit, I can focus, I have motivation, I'm not perpetually tired and overwhelmed all day, I actually talk & converse with people, my thoughts flow into words with ease, my ideas flow into what ever it is I want to get done, all my potential seems to be magically unlocked and unleashed. I don't even get all that stimulated from the stuff, there is that underlying stimulation but I become very calm and lucid...everything just flows out naturally and isn't such a damn task, even talking is a task for me at times.

It's not something I'd want to take every day, only when needed. I can't wrap my mind around how & why it's prescribed as a daily medication. Wouldn't it loose it's "magic" and tolerance would build very quickly with taking it every single day?

What is the process for getting a prescription for such a thing?

im pretty sure I got it, all symptoms seems to fit 100%
never been able to read a book my whole life, but when I smoked weed I could read 50 pages and remember 90-100% or so, really good overview

before no overview of even 5-10 pages, would read the same text on ½ page over and over again
always got tired after 5 pages or 10 pages max

when I smoked weed I could have overview of the whole page at once, felt like reading the whole page at once instead of only the same line again and again

really bad concentration

but I am not sure I am willing to eat pills for it, my studies seem a bit affected
sometimes I get As in the hardest courses , sometimes / much more often I get Fs in easier courses
seems I have to use 3 times as much time for studying as everybody else, even though I have loved doing it all my life since I was 10, just about everyday since then

When I was prescribed it I tried to avoid taking it as often as I could. Hated how it would turn me into zombie and how easily I would get pissed off on it.

The way you put that is exactly what it does for me as well....

The short while I was taking an ssri years ago, that stuff only made me more numb and dull.

And I'd agree with what you say about taking drugs to solve these sorts of problems, especially in regards to keeping the body/mind balanced and in homeostasis. But damn, it's like magic.

For the longest time I never suspected myself of having "adhd", because in my mind those with adhd were the kids that would be bouncing off the walls, hyper as all hell, never being able to pay attention and constantly going from one thing to another. While myself, I'm super quiet, damn near mute at times, the epitome of calm & passive, was always well behaved through out my years of school & growing up....but I'm just constantly immersed in my mind, in my own world, spacing out lost in though, or spacing out just simply observing the world around me. It's hard for me to actually engage with the outside world with things I really actually need to get done.

So true PCPPlease  "Whuuuut?? You mean we're not evolved to spend 7 hours straight in a chair at age 6?!??!"

It's interesting that many of you successfully self-medicated with weed. I remember toking in the woods where I brought my books from class and I would just read and think how hilarious the shit was and remember most all of it... good times :sun:. TBH, I think that what made the difference is that I didn't get fucking baked--just enough to study.

Ironically, I feel I did so well in moderation when I didn't have to worry about it being allowed where I lived

I also studied with the help from a beer or two as well and it worked SUPER fucking well

The #1 best thing to walk out with a script is to get your parents to come and vouch that teachers had always hinted you have ADHD (I discovered this one on accident).

I got my script because I admitted to "abusing it" (using it illegally) and ex-doctor asked how it made me feel/what I did on it )calm, focussed; study, get shit done) and he determined with help from my parents that I'd probaly always had ADHD.

Besides that, memorize the ADHD/ADD criteria in the DSM-IV/DSM-V and remember to answer their questions based on these.

I think I might honestly write a book called "Counter-Psychiatry" (as opposed to Anti-Psychiatry or Psychiatry) detailing this sorta shit.

Good luck :sun:

It's always interested me how much someone's perception of a drug's effect can be altered by their preconceptions about it. I also get pissed off easily on stims and could see how at certain doses it turns me into a zombie, but because of what I was looking for in the drug, I didn't focus on those things: I focused on how good it made me feel, on how much it helped me accomplish, etc. And for that I loved it.

Well I had no preconceptions about how it would effect me since I was 6 years old when I was first prescribed it. All I know was that it was a pill that I had take.  However I was first put on ritalin then later put on adderall which may have played a role.

Well, you probably had the preconception that it was some type of medicine rather than some type of recreational drug, if nothing else. If not, your lack of preconceptions is something to look at in and of itself, as opposed to, say, a preconception of it as a recreational drug. When I first took adderall, I was cynical about pharmaceuticals and associated it (too heavily) with methamphetamine, so I took it to get high, and that's what it did for me.

I'm not hyperactive or impulsive what so ever though, actually the complete opposite of that...Teachers and other parents, and my parents, always commented at how calm, quiet, and well behaved I am. But I have much trouble with focus and getting things done, and lots of trouble with getting my thoughts out in a linear fashion (because I don't think very linearally, and thoughts go off in tangents easily, as some of you may notice with my posts around here :smirk:)

My teachers would often comment how "spacey" and detached I was. I didn't pay much attention in school unless it was something that really pulled my interest, I'd be staring at the ceiling, counting things over and over, getting lost in patterns & textures of things in class, or looking out the window the entire day...But my teachers never cared or talked to me about it because in the end I always did well on tests and reports & stuff, I was usually one of the top students in school, and I was quiet and never spoke or acted out in class .

But homework, reading, getting shit done in general, talking/interacting with others, committing my attention to something that needs to be done...that's quite a challenge for me. Way too many distractions in the world around me, and thoughts in my head, to commit un-divided attention to one single thing (unless, of course, that one single thing is something I'm super into then I can slip into hyper focus like no other).

But yea...I probably should go see about getting an official diagnosis of sorts, as much as I despise labels of such things. I've been told a few times in my life that people suspected me of being kinda aspergy/HFA, but I was always oblivious to my self so what they were pointing out went over my head...now that I'm older and reflecting back, it's becoming clear that I do likely have something like that going on. MDMA and LSD has helped tremendously though, I can't imagine what sorta space I'd be in if I haven't had the experiences I've had.

MDMA and LSD has helped tremendously though, I can't imagine what sorta space I'd be in if I haven't had the experiences I've had.

Way too quiet and introspective.
