I dunno man his hooks are fucking great. What makes most songs he's been in memorable. After the hook drake shold definitely not be apart of.

Well first off, did you ask them? Did you ask your friends before you postedh ere I mean. They might be able to clear things up quicker than we can here. I would only assume. Sometimes they won't acknowledge your question, or will turn their focus to another question irking them, some question they might have been asked a week ago and forgot. Though perhaps the question was asked more recently, maybe a moment ago. For we might go somewhere then find our friends there and ask them this ery question.
Anyways, I'm going to try to approach the terminology "real" and put it into better context. Or a context which we can see a clear association among certain comments. Sometimes I have alot of people talk about real rappers. I never know exactly how to react when they get into that, I usually will refrain or will pass off some subtle hint that I've taken a dislike to their exclamation without proof of its value/truth.
A year ago I recall there was a news report that someone sent a document with a list of people that mentioned "real" rappers in their convos. Apparently someone decided to record every instance someone used that word in a sentence & mark it off on a notepad. So they collected up a total of over 500 names of different people that have flamboyantly boasted of a rapper over themselves or some archetype of the mind.

Realest = Most calculated appeal to the intended demographic and above average sales numbers? Best projection of the gangsta image? Best ability to spit from the dome? No. Realest = shameless, meaningless self promotion.
Thats very cynical.
I think the line is between art that comes from passion of the soul, and art that comes from love of money or fame. Nobody does anything for only one reason though, and getting to another person's true self is impossible AFAIK.
Also there is like fantasy rap, and then rap that deals with cold hard facts. I think music has been like that for a while.
I think everyone changes once they come in contact with the music industry though. Industry will kill an artist inside. Once shit is sold as a commercial product it cannot be an honest thing from someone's soul.
I'd say the artists who rap about how much money they make are more real than the ones who make alot of money but rap about how broke they are and how they gotta kill to get by.

Well call me jaded but whenever people start professing to me how legit, trustworthy, real, or intelligent they are, I tend to believe the opposite. If they were anything of those things there would be no need to try so hard to convince me, it would be self evident.
I think whatever you rap about and for whatever reason you do it, the art should stand on it's own without you loudly proclaiming how real it is (or you are) to everyone listening. Phonies and try hards have to do that to cover up how bad their shit sucks and influence public opinion in their favor.

The varying definitions of real that have been posted here sum it up pretty well. Let me offer a possible point of view:
Maybe they meant "Drake is the realest" because they relate to his music? I personally don't listen to it, but I've heard it before and he is usually rapping about women and relationships. Maybe your friends relate to the things he is saying, and say he is real because he is putting words to popular feelings/situations.

People throw around the word like it is clearly defined. But what exactly does that mean
I was over at a buddy's house and we were vaping
"Drake is the realest nigga in the rap game"
People can debate all day on what defines being "real", but all I can tell you is this.
Drake ain't "real", lmfao.
