First time growing Salvia - Cabbageman's Log
    #19308153 - 12/21/13 01:53 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Strain: I bought them from <SNIP>. I don't know the exact stain.
Lighting: 400w metal halide operating at 250watts capacity. Filtered by 4 plastic screens
Grow Media/Soil Mix: Sunshine mix #4. Soiless medium
Fertilizer: Bio-thrive (Advanced Nutrients). Cal-mag (Botanicare), SR-71 root stimulator (Sure Response) and Grozyme.
Temperature Range: 22C
Humidity:  70-75%
Started From: Clone. I have 6 plants.
Start Date:  Approximately Nov 1st 2013.

Hey everyone!

Glad to be part of this forum and the magical world of Salvia! I need some help with my babies. They haven't been showing signs of growth lately and I am most likely making common new grower mistakes.

Here is a summary of my adventures:

Week 1 - I ordered 6 cuttings from  <SNIP>. The packaging said to transplant them immediately upon arrival, but other people said let them adjust to the environment first. I put them in a small bought plastic humidity dome, with a germination pad under it to keep warm. Incrementally opened the vents of the dome. Did this for about 5 days. Then I decided to take 3 out, and put them in soil I gathered from the backyard. A couple more days ago buy and I said screw it I need to buy some stuff. So I went to the store, bought a huge bag of fresh sunshine mix #4, two 3 foot t5 lights (I think 15w each). I transplanted the last 3 from the dome into this potting soil. I made the mistake of having the lights on 24/7 and after a week I found out and put them under 18/6. They were starting to produce seeds but now that process has reverted.

Week 2 - The first week went by and I noticed the soil was still not dry. At this point I drilled some holes on the sides of the pots for better drainage. All pots are about 4-5inches tall. I have 3 square ones (which contained the sunshine mix) and 3 circle ones (which had my garden soil). Then I added a fan, borrowed from my roommate. Finally some drainage appeared, and for the first couple times all I did was add water and some SR-71.

Week 3 - I decided to start feeding. At this point the plants were showing signs of growth. I started feeding Bio-Thrive (1/3rd dosage), Grozyme (1/2 dosage) again on a once a week basis. I did it again the next week. Then I found out from a local grower I may have been underfeeding, as the leaves were starting to brown. So I increased the dosage to half of what the bottle recommended. I did this for another week and then last week I gave it full strength of everything.

Week 4 - A few days went by. My circle pots in garden soil were not doing good at all (leaves browning and falling off), although the square ones were doing fine...so I talked to the local grower. He said it was definitely the soil, especially since I said they weren't draining good and even mushrooms were starting to grow! I swapped the soil, but kept the same pots. No root rot or bad odor was present, fortunately. I rinsed the roots with cold water as carefully as I could. Put them back in. They didn't look good at all for the first few days so I did reading online and ended up putting bread bags over each plant to keep it very humid. Around this same time I got my new ballast so I put them under the new metal halide light. Started at half power for a few days, 250watts, then a few days later upped to 275watts, and now i'm at 400watts.

Week 5 - Plants were still not doing good and I had a feeling I overfed them. So last night I basically just flushed em with p.h 6 water. I now know to not feed them so much. I'm going to try watering once every sunday (or whenever they need which is usually about a week) for 3 weeks straight with straight p.h 6 water and then once a month I will feed it some nutrients. I'm learning I'm learning! Smiley

So, they have gone through a ton of changes. Lately they have not been showing signs of growth and that's what has bothered me and spurred me to join this forum. The leaves aren't yellowing but often turn brown and I have read this is somewhat normal for Salvia. I don't think they are too close to the light as I have 2 fans blowing and the heat is definitely not overwhelming if you put your hand above them. At least from what I have read online I have not seen symptoms of light burn.

I have these main questions if someone would be so kind to answer:

1) What is a good feeding schedule for them? Right now I basically fill up a gallon milk jug of water, put all the nutrients in and try to divide that gallon equally for each pot. I used to do once a week, now I will water once a week and once a month I will feed at half strength.

2) What is the optimum humidity %?

3) Should I cut/prune or trim the brown leaves? They seem to fall off themselves when they are ready so I have not found much need to touch em.

4) Why are some of my leaves deformed and ragged looking?

Thank you so much!!!

Other Details/Images:

-I have a Kangen machine. This machine is an ionizer. First the tap water runs through the machine. The water is filtered (to remove chlorine, lead and other crap). Then I can choose which p.h level I want the water to come out as. The water is mineral rich, "living" (spinning electrons and photons). It tastes great and has many health advantages (that's why I bought it). The cool thing about it though in relation to growing is that you can choose the P.H level of the water you want (So I have been picking 6.0)

-I have been misting them (p.h of 6) several times a day. I added a drop of organic orange dish cleaner to the mist mix as I heard it helps get rid of white flies, which I was having.

-The plants are in a tray this is on a heated germination pad. I was told this helps stimulate root growth so I've just kept it there.

Present: Week 5-6, December 17th 2013

After doing much reading on this site, I am convinced the main issue with my plants was humidity. I know because everywhere I read online people with beautiful plants have a minimum 50% humidity level. Plus, I remember the first time I put the humidifier in the room when I had the T5's. It didn't get too hot at the time so I could afford to put the humidifier riiight next to the plant. I remember the following morning going to say good morning to the girls and HOLY CRAP the leaves almost tripled in size.

I live in SK Canada, it's very dry here. Humidity is always about 30% in the house, and with a humidifier, in the room, I couldn't get it past 40% ever even with regular misting.

So! I decided to take matters in my own hands. I found some plastic (used for insulation wrap) and basically wrapped the area. The only areas where air and humidity can escape are now through the front. I lowered the light setting to 75% so 275watts, to avoid possibly burning the plastic. Temperature dropped from 26C to 22C. Low and behold I misted a couple times and now the humidity is at a beautiful 75%. Woo!!

We'll see how they like this. That's it. No more big sudden changes. I've learned already clearly that they need time to adjust.

Here's an updated picture of my current setup:

http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh602/cabbageman1/IMG450.jpg

My main concern is the curling and browning of the leaves and a darkness around the base of the root. Why oh why? Usually they wilt when it's near feeding time (dry pot) but lately they have been curling inwards and it is frustrating me not knowing why. The plant is still growing although slow, so I can't tell if it's root rot or something like that.

Here is a clear picture of the symptom. Any ideas folks? Sad

http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh602/cabbageman1/IMG451.jpg

A few growers told me you want to have the light as close as possible but with your hand you dont want to be able to feel an immediate heat.

I cant adjust the level or the light due to limited space, but i can lower it from 275w to 250w. Also have since put a plastic wrap around so the light is now filtered. When i move into my new place il have more freedom.

Also...noticed alot of white flies..lots of eggs. I went on a killing spree last night. Gonna have to buy some spray because soapy water is just not working

12/19/2013

This morning I did a lot more reading. Previously in my soap mist for white flies I was using like a drop or two of orange dish soap. I up'd it up 2tbs as many people recommended. It clearly looks like it will be more effective. Also going to try spraying them before bed, I read that spraying them randomly or when it's really hot can cause curls to leave. I also put up a sticky string trap to help catch more white flies. I continue to kill the flies and eggs with my fingers every day as carefully as possible.

I lowered the light setting from 275w to 250w (the lowest setting I can put it at) and I put 4 more layers of plastic between the light and the top of plants. This way the light is basically filtered 4x more, allowing less direct light at the plants and it should also keep it slightly cooler in there, which I read sally prefers.

Some of the plants seem to have really weak root bases. One of them I put a stick to hold it up, but is this normal? Also don't know what to do for the upcoming feeding as I think I overfed last time. Some people say don't just flush it and stop feeding it. Others say flush it, water it, and when it show signs of growth then feeding. I struggle with knowing if I am overfeeding or not. A guy in a video online said always use 1/4 of what your bottles recommend and never ever more, through the entire life of the plant. Sounds reasonable to me but not sure if that's what experienced sally growers recommend.

I know absolutely nothing about growing salvia so I'm not going to even chime in, but I wanted to say I'm enjoying your thread. I love to read detailed growlogs of ethnos, so keep it up! It looks like you're putting alot of effort into them and they'll reward it. Welcome to the shroomery!

You might want to take the source out though!

Thanks! Glad to be here.

It looks like someone already snipped it lol. Sorry about that. I forgot that salvia is illegal elsewhere. Such a shame. Every human on this planet could learn something from her.

It's not that it's illegal in some places,it's that you gave a source where you got it from, which is forbidden on here:wink:

Ah ok. My bad. Won't happen again.

So in 2 weeks my wife and I move into our first house! (yay!)

I've started building the new grow tent.

Using PVC (easy to mount, disassemble), 4x4ft wide and 8ft tall. When the tent is up, i'll keep the plants there for a about a week and then I am going to transplant them each into 5 gallon pales. That's right, my goal is to grow Salvia trees!! I think part of the problem now is that they are root bound, too much fertilizer and inconsistencies in growing. It also looks like I had white flies because they were attracted to the bio-thrive fertilizer. Since I've killed most eggs by hand and discontinued that stuff they are almost all gone.

I did some more reading online and I met someone the other day and we talked about her experiences growing. She said you can cut off the burned part of the leave and if more then 50% of the leave is damaged then cut the leaf off from the stem that branches from the main stalk. She said don't cut all of the leaves at once, do a couple every 3-4 days or something. Very moderately. She also said make sure you sanitize your cutting shears first, a minute or two in 99% iso then rinsed with hot water.

Misting as good as an idea it is, was inconsistent. The humidity in the box started at 70% in the morning and when I came home from work it was at 40%. So I said screw it, bought a mist humidifier with a programmable option. I set it to 75%. This will keep it a consistent humidity and I think the plants will like that. Plus, this new humidifier has tons of options (warm or cool mist, custom humidity %, spray interval timer, etc.) Well worth the money!

I've read a lot of grow logs on this forum already. I know my posts are long but I want to be as detailed as possible, for my own sake and to help other newbies.
