You should read the following book
Quote:
Whole Earth Discipline: An Ecopragmatist Manifesto is the sixth book by Stewart Brand, published by Viking Penguin in 2009.[1] He sees Earth and people propelled by three transformations: climate change (global warming), urbanization and biotechnology.[2] Brand tackles "touchy issues" like nuclear power, genetic engineering and geoengineering, "fully aware that many of the environmentalist readers he hopes to reach will start out disagreeing with him".[3]
In other words, most of you environmentalists AND climate change deniers are going to be in disagreement with him when you begin reading the book. Perhaps when you finish reading the book as well, but, if you consider yourself to be worth your intellectual salt, Stewart Brand is worth a chance.
Quote:
Speaking on "Rethinking Green", Brand provided a short version of his book:[11] The book challenges traditional environmentalist thinking around four major issues:
- [Dense] Cities are green.
- Nuclear power is green.
- Genetic engineering is green.
- Geoengineering is probably necessary.
And he summarized the book. Urbanization, or the move to cities, requires grid electricity, which one chapter discusses, in particular nuclear power. Another two chapters explain the need for genetic engineering. A "sermon" on science and large-scale geoengineering is a fourth chapter. Fifth is a chapter on restoration of natural infrastructure and benevolent ecosystem engineering.

Look up the Thorium reactor thread, I much agree on nuclear energy being 'green'.
Nice book, i'll definetly give it a read.

I'm most definitely an environmentalist and I don't disagree with those basic claims. Nuclear power has some issues but I think there's good evidence it's better for the planet than fossil fuels. I think there's nothing wrong with genetic engineering or GMOs. I would like it if the major GMO corporations like Monsanto operated more ethically, but that's a problem with administration, not with the basic concept.
Too many environmentalists have a negative knee-jerk reaction to anything they deem "unnatural," not unlike how many people on here make a pointless distinction between "natural" and "synthetic" psychedelics.

naturalism fell off the map decades ago. we have more ultimately useful data now on how to operate on a level of civilization that doesn't harm the environment.
just gotta start putting this operation into effect.
