Moving without a college degree
    #19306697 - 12/21/13 07:28 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

What do you guys think about the idea of moving without a job waiting for you, or a degree? With like a couple grand saved up

Have you done it or know anybody that has?

I would think not having a degree isn't a huge deal, but you'll probably want a job. Do you live on your own now? "A couple grand" won't last you more than a few months without any income, and you may not find a job immediately after moving there.

I've been considering the same thing recently, incidentally. Any particular reason you want to leave, or just a change?

Better than a college degree would be a trade, ie if you are plumber/electrician/mechanic. Those in demand skills beat the crap out of most college degrees IMO. My degree was of little to no help when I moved.
Things to consider: Is the economy decent where you want to move? Housing and cost of living there, is it high? Do you have possible connections for jobs there? If you can line something up before moving that is ideal, it's hard though. I found hardly anyone calls you when you are just thinking of moving. When you move and get a local phone the call backs are much more frequent. Just my take.

i like you sheek and i been homeless for years. i hope you get set up nicely cause this shit sucks.

if i didn't have friends all over that help me everynow and then i'd be fucked completely but I've still found myself fighting off raccoons for dumpster food.

i never realized how many people are on the streets, like we have no where to go and there really ISNT any public space anymore. cops will kick u out of your sleep and tell u to walk out into a storm if ur under shelter in like a park or something.

anyway, yea save a couple stacks at least or buy a nice tent and hit the woods. i camped for a while and its hella better than homeless in a city. if this big bear didn't rape my camp i'd have stayed but i got the message when he ate up my tents n took a nice berry filled shit by our camp fire dig out.

good luck sheek, im actually curious how my fellow twenty something's are faring.
i always thought "oh ill just move out when im 18"

and i did....to a couch in an alley. life is crzy but hey at least i have a laptop

Depends where your going really and how much your willing to compromise. I do quite a bit of hoping around and manage to land on my feet. Get a job or some means of accumulating at least $40 a day so you can maintain basic survival.

I've moved to the same city, twice - without a support network. Never had a problem finding a job, or getting by.

In my experience, jobs are easy to come by in the city - decent jobs are more difficult.

Im.assuming that's what the 2k would be for. It would be impossible to relocate with no working capitol. In comfort or style at least.

From a personal stand point I just moved back to seattle for the 2nd time and quit my job this morning to go back home and go to school. "Its a job" wasnt working for me and see myself going no where if I don't get some sort of schooling. To each his own tho you wants and needs are different from mine. Best of luck.

I don't have any advice per se

But I just wanted to let you know that I support you in this!

I'm going to be hitting the road for a couple of months very soon, just to get away and live a bit

Don't even own a car and my intended destination is over ten hours away...

I'll have about $600-700 saved up to keep me going until I can land a job

Contemplating buying a tent and just living on the beach up there for a couple of months until I return home for uni in March.

nah i do it often.

shroomerites have opened their arms(and homes) to me almost every state i go and i have yet to accept as i am a humble man and want to make it on my own.

i been thinking though everyone needs help from time to time so i am going to accept the offer next time im near a fellow shroomerite and i'll just work around the house or clean so i don't feel like i'm undeserving.

i don't need much as i usually sleep on the floor. i gotta say aysen is a great guy and i hope i meet him and his wife or g/f again. they were super cool.

Someone took me in in FL too and supposedly this nice lady will help me out when i head back to tx.

now i may hit up jersey/PA so if anyone wants to chill im down. texas is most likely though cause i liked it and i wanna trip balls with this shroomerite and see the stars at night cause texas has a beautiful night sky.

It wouldn't hurt to go online and find some places that are hiring in the area your moving to, and apply to them a couple of weeks before the move.

That way you might be able to set something up for when you arrive.

That's a bad ass way to live if your comfortable getting so personally acquainted with someone so fast. Im a bit too type A to handle that myself but way more power to you. And I'm sure the good experiences land some cool friendships.

Do it. When well planned a life outside for a while can be very fulfilling imo. The best time to start its only a couple months away too.

You NEED to have a job set up for you before you get there. One of my cousins went to Oklahoma for what he thought was a sure job and ended spending 6 months in a cockroach infested hut. It took almost all his money to get back to cali. However my other cousin went there and is doing great in his new job. So you just need a sure thing kind of job before you move there. Unless you want to be homeless

If you know someone in the area who will let your crash at first, while you find a job, then hell yeah. The 2 grand will be your "nest egg" so to speak.

Hey OP.

I did exactly this.

I moved from California to Texas without a college degree, nor a job.  It was tough at first, and any real change will be hard to muster up.

My advice to you is to have established connections you know, and can trust before you actually move.  That really helped me out in the long run.  Even if you do not, start buddy-buddying people on the internet in the area you're planning on moving to.  If you get raped, well then you get raped, right?  Rape is rape.  Rocks are rocks.  Life is life.

My second advice to you is once you're at the place you moved to, go out as much as possible and talk to as many people as much as possible.  Try to develop a healthy network because this will be the only way to get your foot in the door.  You'll even have to do this to a rather high level with a college degree, especially nowadays.  Even if you're a shy beta bastard, start practicing with your fears; it'll only make you more sharp of a charmer, you fucking pussy waffle.  I'm just kidding, best of luck good and glorious friend.
