mycelium growth
    #19305553 - 12/20/13 10:51 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

hi, i started this project 2 weeks ago, these are some of the jars that i took a pic thinking that the mycelium is starting to stop growing. i had it in my desk with a baseboard heater behind it. i know that is dry heat so i put a humidifier in there to let the air stay pretty moist half the time. i had 1 jar that did not do anything so i checked the vermiculite and it seems fairly dry. what can i do so it can continue to grow? maybe add a little bit of water on the top and let it trickle down? plz help

What style of lid do you have (pics would help) ?  The fact that you have a tin-foil lid is probably not good as it restricts fresh air exchange.

i used a second piece of tin foil for the lid. once i was done with my project i let the verm breath with the holes that were made from the needle and took off the second layer of tin foil

They look like they are bigger then your hand.... Which is to big.. The foil is slowing your colonization down, Also you need to know what the temp is down there if you have it next to a heater with a humidifier it's prolly getting way to hot.

Just needs to sit on a shelf somewhere left alone with the foil off in a smaller jar.

Taking off the foil is a good start it will allow moisture to rise.

84 is way too high.  It might have stalled, because like Cronicr said, all your moisture is at the bottom, compacting your sub, also, 84 opened the door for the nasties to walk right in and take a comfortable seat right on your sub.

If you flip it, flip it with the cover, and the dry layer of verm still intact.

...and that jar is way too big for BRF cake colonization man.  Maybe you can crumble and case it if is stalls for too long....

yes it would just make sure you get all that uncolonized shit off the top and rinse well after you dunk

:whathesaid:

Those are way too big. They are bound to stall.  That's why we use 1/2 pint jars. Birth em if they stalled, wash off whats not colonized, dunk, rinse, roll, fruit.  You at least should get something instead of nothing.

Yup. 1/2 pint wide mouth if ya plan to birth them as cakes.  I've done pint size jars  my first time and they took over a month to colonize and a few just stalled out.  After switching to 1/2 pint size, they were done by 2 weeks in perfect conditions.

rule of thumb for the pf tek is they should be as wide as they are tall:thumbup:
