Forced oxygen "flow hood"?
    #19304034 - 12/20/13 05:30 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Is bottled oxygen free of contams?  Could one simply run an oxygen hose from a tank, into a SAB and get a flow hood effect?  May be expensive, but if you're only needing it here and there could be more economical than building/buying a flow hood.  What do you guys think?

Liquid oxygen is, but once it's put into tanks it's not.  However, you don't want an oxygen enriched atmosphere near your alcohol torch when you flame sterilize.

If you are using a good still air box there will be no reason to pipe in any O2.  Just clean your SAB with a 10% bleach solution before you use it and leave the walls damp.  Work quickly and efficiently and you should be just fine.

Speaking as a former torch glass person, the flow dynamics are too turbulent to be reliable, unless you made like a mini laminar box, which kind of defeats the convenience of using the tank you have. You'd need a stable curtain of air, not a jet the way a tank would make.

Everything you need to do in this hobby can easily be achieved in your unmodified sab

I would never take the time to do this. haha. The idea popped into my mind and thought I would let it out.  Thought maybe someone else could benefit from it.

CO2 "flow hood"? [Re: RogerRabbit]
    #21775570 - 06/07/15 07:15 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Oxygen might not be good with an open flame,
what about CO2, Argon, Helium, Nitrox, ect?
i've read pressurized liquid CO2 is sterile.

To get 'laminar airflow' just build a filter box,
that CO2 can blow into, and flow out smooth.
No real need for HEPA (though it could help)

This is the only thread i found on the idea,
but i think this can work, maybe even better!
What you guys think, poke any holes in here?

This would probably be cheaper, that was the main point, and might have other benefits.
