Pressure Cooker Problem/danger

Did I almost cause an explosion? So here's what happened, I was pressure cooking the other day, and when It had cooled and was done, I took the lid off.
The safety valve (i think) fell out of the lid. The little metal piece that pops up when the cooker is pressurized. It had become unscrewed from the threads inside.
So, if this had come off while I was still cooking, this could have caused a massive release of pressure, possibly an explosion. right? What can I do to prevent this?
By the way, its a presto 23 quart PC, only like 50 dollars. So a cheap-o model.

Get out the manual or download it and read it would be my guess.
Just make sure it gets tightened with wrenches, not just fingers.

I don't know if you should be using the words "PC" and any type of "mass expansion of molecules" together in any sort of sentence.

It wouldn't have exploded, but your plug could have popped, releasing a terrible stream of steam that would burn the shit out of you if you were in front of it.
I had an overpressure plug blow once. It was loud, scary, and a mess, but it was fine. Cracked the jars.
When you get one of those cheap PCs (or anything with screws that has been shipped) you should always check to make sure everything's tight. Truckers don't exactly skip potholes, and you hit enough of them and things get loose.

Hmmm, that makes sense.
I dunno if its a common sense thing, or if maybe somebody should make a specific post for warning people about cheap PC's. Unless there already is one.

I went through the manual when I first got the thing. Maybe that was mentioned but they obviously didn't make it sound important.

It was important enough for them to spend the money on paper and ink, wasn't it?

The rules of using a particular model aren't generic. There are subtle (sometimes very important) differences between models. It is very important to download, or obtain a copy of, your particular model.
I'm pretty sure all the current model manuals are available online or by phone/email.

Yeahhh thats true. Just went through the whole manual and it was listed as a safety tip. Seems like they should have more written on safety issues though.
These things are confusing to use when you first start. I've been using it for a while now, but at first I did it soooo wrong. Even with all the instructions on here. (mainly because it was a totally different style of PC)

My Presto says to put 3 Qts of water in it for use while my AA sterilizers want 11/16" on the bottom. That's a hella difference.

11/16" is 1 1/2 Qts so it's exactly half. The Presto comes with a rack at the bottom to keep it off the bottom higher than the AA.
That was 22 years ago that I read that. I may be mistaken, but I've used it enough that I'm pretty sure that it's the correct amount.

My 23 qt presto takes 3 quarts for a 90 minute cycle, and there's a quart left over. That's enough for me to be comfortable about not running it dry, and if I happen to pass out on the couch from smoking too much weed waiting on the PC, it buys me a little extra time before it runs dry.
AA sterilizers need less water because they don't vent once you flip the valve.

You do realize those PCs have lines in the bottom to tell you how much water to use, right?

You are correct sir, plus the basket would be fighting the lid trying to keep afloat. Too much and you would be fighting it trying to put the lid on.

This is what happens. It doesn't explode, but your eardrums will think it has. Jars crack from the sudden pressure differential between inside and outside the jar. RR

The weird thing on mine is that the toggle arm will stick straight up and exhaust steam out of the 4 little holes before it blows any plug. That's a lifesaver right there.

sounds like it would be scary.
I've never seen the actual damage a full on PC explosion can do. But I bet its a lot worse than that. I don't want to google pictures of it for fear of the NSA
