Substrate shrinkage after sterilization. Normal?
    #19302737 - 12/20/13 12:36 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

My recipe was taken from the pf tek shroom vid...2 cups verm,1 cup brown rice flr, and 1 cup of water. I noticed the substrate was very fluffy but the consistency seemed different this time. I made another small batch of the same proportions and it produced the same consistency (extremely light, yet clumpy, and airy) When I filled the jars, there definitely was enough room for more IF i'd patted them down but I didn't want to do that.  But once the jars were filled, topped off with verm, and sterilized in the PC...they came out with about 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch of space from the lid to the surface of the verm. Is there something I might've done wrong? Should I have pat them down?  And should I now throw them out?  I don't want to throw out this batch if it can still be used.  I just want to make sure the extra space won't increase my contam and failure potential.

Thanks in advance.
