inoculating coir without spawn

I misplaced my PC for a few weeks. I have a bag of sterilized coir substrate, can I just inoculate it directly instead of using spawn?

ya, that would be a waste. I like to spawn heavy so projects colonize quickly in order to avoid problems. also when spawning to coir the nutes come from our spawn. in short, contams will happen

I imagine you maybe could if it was kept sterile and inoculated. It maybe could've helped to add a bit of gypsum to the coir to assist in calcium n sulphur. Though i dont quite know if it really would work as ive never tried it nor heard about this so dont take my word for it haha. You can always experiment though.

Make sure you only open the coir under very still conditions in a SAB or in front of a flowhood, and inoculate with an agar wedge or with a spore syringe if you dont have agar going yet. Inoculating sterile substrates with spore syringes is sketch because no spore print is sterile.
The vendors produce very clean spore syringes/prints and thats why we can inoc directly from them into sterile substrates. Though even the vendors can get contams in some of their spore syringes/prints. Its just the nature of spore prints.

The answer is no.
The reason coir is so 'contamination resistant' is because for still-unknown reasons, fungi spores do not like to germinate on it. Trich won't germinate on coir, and mushroom spores won't germinate on it either.
This is why we inoculate grains or brf cakes, and then use these to spawn our coir substrates. RR

I see. I also have sterile straw/manure but that would probably be worse.
Ive also read about steaming the spawn several times to allow the contams to germinate so that they become vulnerable, would that work for wbs?

You need spawn gman. You need it. So grab a PC and start cookin. With the right spawn and substrate combo you can go up to a 1:40 ratio with P. cubensis without issue. so beg 4, repair, or borrow that pc, grab some poly and jars out of the trash and recycling and get cookin'.

Either the trich spores germinated on the shroom mycelium (because trich is a myc parasite) rather than uncolonized coir or mature trich myc moved onto the coir from somewhere else. The usual suspect is trich on your spawn but there can be other sources. Usually when they germinate on the myc it is after a few flushes and the myc has weakened and is not as resistant to contams.

You get trich on coir tubs because it can germinate on your spawn grain or brf or whatever other medium you are using to spawn to that coir and once it germinates its free to grown about just like the mycelium.

by the way. you should be pasteurizing, not sterilizing your sub.when you pasteurize correctly you leave certain microorganisms alive that the cube myc loves. it keeps the mean green and others out for a couple weeks allowing your myc to colonize and get a strong hold

Yeah I thought the bags of substrate I had were pasteurized but theyre not, strange because ive always had success with them.

Coir and verm can be sterilized and used, pasturizing is just safer

what if i submerge the jar of wbs in a pot of oil, slowly bring it to 250 covered and then slowly allow it to cool so that the jar won't break? stoner thought

i think if the jar is tightly sealed it'll explode. if not, it'll inhale oil or ambient air as it cools. i don't think it'll work out so well.

the top part with the injection port and filter will not be submurged. I don't think oil will get in

as one who loves to deep fry stuff, in fact will be frying a ton tomorrow, can't say i'd ever consider it. seems like it could work, but what a pain in the ass. it would certainly throw off the timing, and i bet the jar would be buoyant, meaning you have to hold it under the entire time. then when it's done, you gotta clean the oil off the jar(s) without getting the filter wet. try that just one time and see how you like it.
or just wait for the pressure cooker. =P
edit: yeah wait it positively will not work. while you're waiting with the jar in the oil, all the water in the grain or whatever is gonna steam out the filter and your jar will dry out. it may be sterile, but also barren.
