substrate/ media question

Would it be potentially beneficial to use a combination of clay hydroton stones at the bottom of the terrarium, covered with the normal layer of perilite?
The reason i ask is because my terrarium has a deep base reservoir, and I want the substrate to be at the level that the doors are. (this terrarium is taller than it is wide with doors that open at the front)
I could fill it all the way up with perilite, but I feel like the hydroton would supply added water retention that the perilite could draw from.
my only concern is whether my submersible heater will be able to supply enough heat evenly through all of that insulation. (were talking about roughly 4 inches from the bottom of the tank to the doors level).
If anyone has any input, comments, or suggestions, they would be hugely appreciated. Thanks.

It sounds like the hydroton might not have the porosity to wick water up to the perlite layer to saturate it in the way it's normally used. All that perlite surface area could still act as a RH buffer, but I think it would reduce the potential RH rather than increase it.
Potentially beneficial, but I say unlikely. Bust out the hygrometer and some graph paper.
As for heat - the layer of standing water at the bottom of the FC makes an excellent heat sink & diffuser. I've heated FCs with a simple light bulb with heat rising through a metal shelf, the FC plastic, then 2-3" of perlite and it works just fine.
Also, this is my first ever post, so hi everyone!

Hydroton will not be as effective in retaining moisture as perlite, but will work.

his first too you guys really need to think about a simple shot gun fruiting chamber, no hygrometer/graphpaper/hydroton/submersible heater required
