Problems with thumb drives and external hd's.
    #19296370 - 12/19/13 02:53 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I bought a new computer last year to replace my old one. Recently my friends computer started taking a turn for the worse and it is very very old. My old computer isnt top of the line but it is a large improvement from their current one.

Anyways, my old computer would sometimes recognize thumb drives and external hd's and it wouldnt ever let anything transfer and sometimes it would show up for a second then disappear and not be recognized anymore. I'm trying to figure out what exactly could cause this so I can isolate the problem and replace whatever is wrong so I can send the computer their way.

Thanks for the help in advance!

USB drivers up to date? Bios up to date? if not go to manufacturer website for motherboard and download latest.

So from your post it seems like you can plug in the USB device and it will show up for a bit, then dissapears? This could be a problem with your computer trying to install the drivers for said USB device. It could also be a problem with the actual port the USB device is connecting to.

I'd try manually downloading and installing the drivers and see if that works, followed by a system update as well. If that doesn't work it could potentially be a problem with the USB device its self, or the USB port.

Try the thumbdrives and USBs on a known working computer, if it works properly then you know that the problem is with your computer. If it doesn't, then you know that the problem is with the USB device its self.

Yeah the same external hard drives that wouldn't work on my old computer work fine on my new one.. I'm going to try and update bios and drivers though, I should have tried that sooner..

Well you at least narrowed down the problem! Updating a BIOS is also known as flashing, and this could be a potentially VERY risky thing to do, and could totally brick your computer! I'd suggest doing other methods first (such as updating your OS through windows update, manually installing drivers) before flashing your bios.

Is there any better way to update drivers? I keep everything up to date on windows update so thats as up to date as can be. The only reason I ask about which drivers to look for is because both drives do the same thing and one is brand new and the other one is internal and that ones external.. So I am thinking its like you guys said a driver that they all use or some shit like that. But this one is a blu ray drive (internal) and a dvd drive I just bought (external) and both of them do the same thing . I know how to update device drivers for each individual device but I dont know about drivers that all devices use or whatever.

I don't mind updating bios and all that shit on my old computer, its like 3-4 years old lol. That one the windows installation cant be repaired because its messed up even though Ive installed with multiple discs. Windows works and everything but its the one with the external hd problems.

So yeah, I have two issues both of which are a little beyond what I understand at this point. I used to be very good with computers when it was dos then win 95 and all that shit but now I'm rusty and only know enough to use it lol

Are you running Windows 7?

Well there are drivers, and then there are operating system updates. Drivers are programs that allow devices to be able to communicate with your operating system and other hardware. Let's say you have a Kensington USB drive model aq12, I'd google "Kensington USB drive aq12 drivers".

Internal drives are a littel different since they won't be using USB, as they won't be using a USB connector, they will either be using SATA or PATA cables. You mention that you have a problem with both your internal, and external drive, I think this is a sign that you might have a problem with your motherboard, or that your computer is not compatible with said devices.

It sounds like it's either that your computer will not support the devices, or there's something wrong with the hardware. If you really don't mind, go for a BIOS update. If that doesn't work, than I think you're out of luck.

Yeah I know what drivers are and how to update them.. I just meant like if both drives were fucking up that it's probably a driver they both use? Like a generic one? or something like that. But damn I hope its not the motherboard =(. The blu ray came with my computer so I dont know why it wouldnt be compatible. I'm calling tech support tomorrow to get it straightened out though but I'm just seeing if I can get it fixed without that.

Yeah windows 7. But yeah I know about operating system updates and what drivers do..  However like I said, I didn't know if there might be a generic driver that both of those drives are trying to use? Never really had anything like this happen before lol.

I'll call them tomorrow and see what they say and have me do.. I don't want to update the BIOS on this computer since its really not that old and don't want to risk losing all my stuff. I only have like 3 games on disc anyways so it wouldnt be worth it. But still if I can get it fixed then I will so thats why I'm trying

The old computer I don't use and will never use. I'm just trying to save some money by not having to buy any new parts. My moms computer is old as dirt and my old one will be a HUGE upgrade. So I was just trying to see if I could get it to read usb drives and then it would be set to go.

My new computer is still under warranty I think.. i hope it is anyway haha

This is my new computer.. The blu-ray I'm trying to get straightened out came with this.

Well I doubt they would both use the same driver, it is possible that they could both be using a generic driver, but with Windows 7 it will automatically try and find an applicable driver. Even if it doesn't find the correct one, they will be using generic drivers but it won't be the same as one is Blueray and one is DVD.

It sucks to have a motherboard problem, but you mentioned it worked on a different computer (was that computer Windows 7 as well?) so it could be the interfaces that it plugs into.

For the Internal drive, if you have any other SATA cables lying around try using those, and plugging them into different ports on the SATA host controller.

Hope this makes sense, the ketamine is kicking in :lolsy:

Yeah, I will try and see if I can move the blu ray hook up to another spot.

I also didn't think they shared the same driver.. I thought it might be possible but then I realized exactly what you said that ones dvd and the other is blu ray lol.

The computer that the USB HD and thumb drives doesnt work on is windows vista.. the one they work on is my new computer (the computer where the disc drives wont work right)

That could be one of the problems! Vista had very few signed drivers afaik, and had lots of problems with peripheral devices.

So on your new computer the USB HD and thumb drives work, but the disc drives don't? What model of disc drives are you using?

I could possibly pay for a copy of windows 7 to put on it.. Or maybe windows 8 (i know its shit but i wouldnt be using it and its cheaper).

But yeah new computer usb thum and hds work and the discs drives dont.

The link I posted is my computer but I don't know what specific drive it is right off hand. I'm going out to the barn where all my computer shit is so I can get all the documentation for everything.

In device manager it says
HL-DT-ST BDDVDRW UH12NS29 ATA device.

this is the link to the usb drive I bought (just a cheap throw away one)

You can download a driver for that BD drive here: http://www.driverscape.com/download/hl-dt-st-bddvdrw-uh12ns29-ata-device

It's driver version 6.1.7600.16385, so if that's the driver you have than there's no point to downloading it.

If the disc drives don't work I think the problem lies with the cabling, or ports on your computer.

Yeah this is out of my league (not the driver) but the cabling and ports..so both the external drive and internal run off the same cabling/port or whatever? I don't know how that works with one being usb and one internal.

Also, you can wait until you relax and come back.. I'm not in a rush. No reason to waste your fun time on this lol

They don't function on the same cabling and ports. External drives for the most part connect through USB or eSATA ports. Internal drives (on newer hardware) connect through SATA ports on a SATA controller. The SATA controller is a little rectangle thing attached to your motherboard that you plug your internal hard drives, disc drives, and other drives into. That uses a SATA cable to connect to the internal drive.

SATA cable: https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQo3TkpJLSyTpzCUNc1vpQ1T-yapTxR_9YXdO6n0E8OQyiwBhWPOlamcsU

SATA controller: https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRPugyF9ojoKzWC9gbkMsynvVYrJCVMFsFjTo6fYjfnmNXdfIiNoEG7rfs

That SATA controller is a little different than the one I described though.

So you could have problems with those points of connections, and where they connect to your motherboard.

It's all good man I don't have anything else to do lol

I guess I still don't understand how both of them aren't working? Since one uses eSATA or usb and the other one connects to the sata controller?

Yeah I hooked up an internal hard drive a few months ago, that was SATA. I know the sata controller looks like.

This isn't do or die really.. No one really needs disc drives anymore and I only have 3 games out of hundreds on my computer that use a disc.. Still would be nice to get it resolved though. I'm gonna look up that driver in a second

ok, this is a last resort, but mabey try this out, its a solid program, I can vouch for their other products being real good.  I ressurected my 4 year old slave computer using IOBIT software.

pretty easy to get pro version if you want for free.
