Seahorses are not a good choice for a first salt tank.  I've had them, and they are particularly sensitive to water condition changes.

OP:  What size tank are you considering?

So uhh... whats the question?

Btw enlil is right, seahorses are a bit touchy.  Badass but touchy.  Youre probably looking for a trigger, or some clowns.  Again enlil is right, what size are we talking.  Filter set up etc.  Why is enlil always right?

I want to get somewhere between 20-40 gallon tank

As for my questions, I really dont know shit about fish tanks, other than it would be cool to get one for the kid

But if I am going to go through the hassle of doing a fish tank, I want to do a nice salt water one with some cool fish, some nice coral, and what not

I know there's a lot of homework that goes into salt water tanks so I am just kinda using this thread to get a basic rundown of what I need and what to watch out for..

I guess the first questions would revolve around filters and the basic insides of a salt water tank...

Seahorses sounds fucking badass but I think id have to wait until after our cold season at least

By coral, I assume you mean dead/fake coral.  A live reef tank is absolutely not something you want to start off with.

20 gallons is very small.  Keep in mind that the smaller the tank, the harder it is to keep the water conditions stable.  This is particularly true of a salt water tank where evaporation will increase the salt content unless the evaporated water is replaced.

As far as the basic setup, you'll need the tank, stand, light, filter, and heater.  You'll also need some tools, like thermometer, hygrometer, etc.  There are plenty of other pieces of equipment that you can get if you're a tech geek and/or want to spend a lot of money, but those basics will do you just fine to start.

For the aquarium, you're going to have to decide if you want one with an overflow box or not.  The overflow box makes it so that the tank always stays at the same level, but it does require more equipment and money.  If you're planning on going cheap, don't bother with it.  Similarly, if you're going with a small tank, don't bother.  By the time you are in a position to appreciate the overflow, you'll probably want a different tank anyway.

If you're not going with an overflow, you have two basic filter setups:  1.  The kind that hangs of the back of the tank, and 2. a canister filter.  The former is cheaper and easier to set up.  The latter makes your setup much cleaner and can provide superior filtration.

If you go with choice 1, I suggest getting a filter for a tank larger than yours.  Those filters generally have minimal bio filtration capacity, so get one a little larger just to make sure that it can handle the fish you put in the tank.  Canister filters have more capacity, and you can usually increase capacity pretty easily as your tank grows.

If you're going with a tank with an overflow box, you're going to need a whole other setup in the tank stand.  These sump systems are significantly more expensive and complicated, but they also allow you to expand the system with other equipment.  If you're going this direction, let me know and I'll give you more specifics.

Eventually, I think I'd like to get three huge saltwater aquarium setups. One for typical saltwater fish, the kinds that get along with each other, and then a separate aquarium for cuttlefish, and one for a nautilus. I don't know if I'll end doing it though. I feel bad about keeping animals in captivity and the fact that most saltwater fish are wild-caught. They typically use poisons to stun the fish so that they are easier to catch.

Enlil, thank you much for the information.

I had no idea that live coral were soo difficult to sustain. My buddy back in AZ had a badass fish tank and had lots of cool coral in there and I didnt realize the amount of work that went into it

I would still like to get something where he can have a couple of seahorses, I think he would really really dig that. Apparently there is a store nearby that specializes in salt water aquariums so I guess I will stop by there once I have a better background and understanding of what I want to do

I think I am now leaning towards a tank closer to 40-50 gallons and definitely going with the canister-type filters. Money isnt a HUGE issue but I do want to keep it within reason... Maybe not starting off with live coral, but I would definitely like to incorporate that at some point.

Are there different types of heaters? I am hoping I can at least find the tank and maybe the stand on craigslist after christmas... If not, I can build a solid stand that wouldnt cost more than 30-40$ in supplies

Live coral takes a lot more equipment, and you'll need to have an overflow setup with a sump to accommodate the equipment.  By the time you're ready to do a reef tank, you'll be buying a whole new setup for sure.

There are two basic kinds of heaters.  The most common is your basic submersible tube heater.  They come in different wattages for different tank sizes.  This types goes right into the tank, or if you have a sump, it can go in the sump.  The second kind is an inline heater.  This just goes in the hose between your canister filter and your tank and the water flows through it.  I've used both and used to swear by inline filters until one failed on me.  I guess it's a matter of preference, but I always liked the idea of not seeing the heater.

Right now, I have a 500 watt submersible in the sump of my salt tank and a 300 watt inline in my fresh tank.

If you're really going to do seahorses, I'd recommend starting with a few fish and see how you do for a few months before buying them.  They're going to want your tank well-cycled and maintained.

You want a cool pet, mantis shrimp. A 20 gallon is a reccomeded size for an average 6 inch adult female (males smaller). Use to have one and by far favorite aquatic pet I've had. Feeding time is pretty cool hehe just has to be a solitary tank dedicated to the animal. Mean little fuckers.

Basics which I'm sure enlil covered (too high to read it all) but cycle the tank first with live rock. This will be what filters your tank for the most part. I built a tiny refuge on the back of an old 10 out of a 2.5 gallon. Add some live rock in there, macroalgae and your gonna have a pretty stabe system filter wise, the bacteria on the rock will eat the fish shit. Also beneificial copepods will come in on the rock, on rare occasions parasitic ones are possible.

I use to wait 2 months to start adding coral and fish. Start out no coral then move to easy ones like shrooms and zoanthids once you feel you've mastered keeping the salinity stable. The guys do need light. 4 whats per gallon was the average I used for zoanthids.

If you want a community tank a real cool addition would be a goby/pistol shrimp pair. The shrimp burrows in the sand and the goby acts as its lookout near the entrance and warns the blind shrimp when danger approaches.

cool, thanks for the ideas

I am going to make a stop into the shop in the next week or two and get some of the finer details figured out, what fish can be in the same environment and some unique additions

I think I am going to get the tank this weekend and build the stand myself

Use to have a pico reef on my desk. Built a mini wood stand for it. Worth it, make the wood nice and dark and the reef will stand out way more.

The live rock cannot cycle by itself.  It needs an ammonia source.  The live rock harbors the bacteria that breaks down the ammonia from the other animal's waste.  You need to provide an ammonia source to increase the bacteria in the rock to get it up to speed.

Coral is difficult only because of it's light requirement, which is substantial.  Almost all coral has symbiotic algae that provides most of its nutrition.  Anything it captures with it's harpoons is gravy.  Without serious light it never lives.  Put a shitload of live rock in a tank.  Add one small fish.  Let it pee for a while and test the ammonia.  It will spike and then subside as the bacteria proliferate.  Add another fish.  Monitor the ammonia.  It will spike and then subside as the bacteria proliferate.  Don't forget that cleaner critters. i.e snails and crabs, also pee.  I would say that a twenty gallon tank with a hefty pile of live rock shouldn't have more than three or four inches of fish and one or two invertebrate maintenance men.

So to re-visit this thread, I have decided to go with a 55 gallon tank, a cannister filter, and in-line heater

Thinking I want clownfish first or maybe Butterflies, also liked the Panther Groupers

I need to find fish that are compatible though.. I really would like to breed them too, maybe make a little money

I had this fish die like a month ago and i left it in there until today... It's nowhere to be found.
I thought it was like inside the temple floating up... It's not there.
