I found this plant in a small clear cut on the mid oregon coast. It is absolutely huge and very thorny. Ive lived here for over 20 years and never seen this plant before.
It has lots of tiny white to yellow flowers which i find odd considering we just had the coldest week setting records in my area, down to as low as 14 degrees f.
Its really bothering me that i cant figure out what it is! could use some help from some of you plant experts.

Gorse bush the flower can be fermented with sugar and yeast to form a nice sweet flower wine with a coconut aroma. The dried spines are good kindling for fire starting.

That is Gorse and is probably a noxious weed to your area. The North island of New Zealand is covered in it. Only good use is to grow marijuana in the middle of it.
Gorse sucks!

Ulex is native to my country and a very familiar sight. However, as Karode pointed out, it may a invasive weed elsewhere. From Wikipedia:
"In many areas of North America (notably California and Oregon), southern South America, Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii, the common gorse, introduced as an ornamental plant or hedge, has become an invasive species due to its aggressive seed dispersal; it has proved very difficult to eradicate and detrimental in native habitats."

It must be kind of rare here, this is the first time ive ever seen one.
They probably get really annoying where they are prolific, they are thorny as hell
Im looking forward to trying to make some wine though once more of the flower buds open up.
Im also going to gather dried thorns and put them with my firestarter kit in a waterproof box i keep in my backpack.
