wtf Fruiting from under cake???

The mushrooms began growing from underneath my only non contaminated BRF cake.. It has been in the FC for quite a while with no signs of fruiting until just 5 minutes ago I noticed a head popping out from underneath. Flipped it and found a couple other tiny ones lol. I was very happy but confused, is this weird?.. I find it weird.. but then again I'm a certified noob. Can anybody tell me why ?

yes. Trim it so it's just slightly bigger diameter than the cake. Or, just use the jar lids instead.

You only need as much foil as there is cake to sit it on. Cut the foil till it's JUST big enough for the cake to not touch the verm(stoner moment) perlite. It's ok if the mushrooms do.

You just gotta keep in mind with this hobby that your fruits will form in the most ideal conditions possible so in this instance the cakes' surface on the bottom holds a much more favorable relative humidity (RH) than that of its top. Due to the bottom not being perfectly flat, and what its sitting on not being either, there is obviously enough Fresh Air Exchange (FAE) occurring down there to provide the necessary evaporation for pin formation. So its not so much "weird" as it is a common occurrence using the growing method you've chosen

Okay so should I also add some perlite?? Is that why there isnt enough humidity or maybe Not spraying enough water? (2-3 times a day on walls +perlite)

Basic Principles of the SGFC
Quote:
SpitballJedi said: Principles and construction of Shotgun Fruiting Chambers (SGFC):
This guide is not focused on PF/BRF cakes per se. It's really just the basics of how the SGFC works.
How it's made A properly made SGFC Is made of a clear/transparent tote with 1/4" holes on all 6 sides about 2" apart in a grid pattern. All 6 sides means the 4 vertical sides AND top AND bottom.
They need 4"-5" of damp perlite. You may need to rinse the perlite a few times to get rid of the dust. The dust can accumulate at the bottom, clogging the holes. A few pieces of perlite may fall through the hole, but only a few.
Principle of operation A properly made SGFC uses natural air currents to create high relative humidity (RH) and constant fresh air exchange (FAE).
The fresh air that flows in through the bottom holes rises up through the damp perlite assisting in evaporation. This evaporation is where you get your humidity.
Because humid air rises, it flows up and out the other holes, thus allowing more fresh air in through the bottom. This is how you get constant FAE without sacrificing humidity.
Some Things to Consider The SGFC must not sit directly on a flat surface. It needs to be elevated. If not elevated, air can't flow in through the bottom and the whole system breaks down.
Running a fan in the room with your SGFC will also disrupt the natural currents.
Once inside the SGFC, your cakes will need to misted and fanned. Because of the constant FAE, your cakes will dry out if not misted regularly. Schedules may vary slightly from region to region, but 3-6 times a day is pretty common.
Mist your cakes till they glisten with moisture and then fan the SGFC out. There is a magic moment when your cakes are no longer glistening, but they still appear moist, this is when you want to mist and fan again. Do this as often as required.
Mist cakes directly with a fine mist. The over-spray helps keep your perlite damp. Misting the walls serves absolutely no purpose.

You should take a lid fill it with moist verm instead of tin foil, works great!

When I did my PF grow this was pretty common. It happens for the reasons mentioned. I had some standing water sitting in my fishtank, I had a pane of glass to keep droplets from hitting cakes when I sprayed and used the airstone in a cup method.
it was all from a book, didn't even call it the PF tek, but it did lead me here and the rest is history, got into casings, etc

try to even out your perlite so it doesn't dry out faster on the ends of your FC...might help retain moisture a little longer...

Walmart was good for small bags of peat, but hell the 3 cubic feet ones from like Home Depot are only 11 bucks and it's easily like 4 times as much

Use this tek works good lots of fruits check my casing on my signature, anyway take a clean pan I use old Chinese take-out containers, lay an inch of moist verm mixed with gypsum on the bottom, take your fully colonized cake and crumble it into dime size pieces, lay your colonized substrate on the verm/gypsum evenly, now lay a 1/2" off verm with peat moss and gypsum, u can use coco coir as well thats pasteurized on top. I then spray it down with fresh spring water and put the lid on that has a hole filled with polyfill or holes covered with micropore until I see the myc start popping up on top of the casing. Then its time to put it in the fruiting chamber, I mist casings twice daily and use a small fan after I mist and 3-4x daily. Keep the RH around 90% and give it 12 hours of light a day and you should see pins in a week or two at most.

I used to buy like all my shit at w/mart, only perlite they have is Miracle Grow an everyone used to tell me oh no u can't use that lol 3 years later its sold by companies who repackage it. I prefer the large perlite I get from this Hydro shop cause it doesn't get all sloppy , nice dime size pieces an no dust organic shit. As for Peat I go to garden stores around me 1 block away I have a huge garden center so I'm lucky. I gotta lb of gypsum for like 4.99 that lasts forever, I buy organic long grain brown rice and found a cheap grinder for 9.99 that I use to shred brown rice or shrooms to make capsules, chocolates, etc.
