Hey Violet how long do you think half pints of brown rice need to be sterilized in a PC? And how long if steam sterilized in a pot? I've tried straight brown rice once without much luck. I'd like to give it another go.

righteous. thanks, my man. thanks everyone. looks like i'm hung up on the expansion angle to deal otherwise. still, i'm not giving up on this idea just yet. i really (really) dig the process of PCing to prep the grain. sometime i'll revisit it when i'm better at all this to compare side by side to see if it makes any difference.
meanwhile, i find myself prepping to spawn that second jar. pasteurized sub is cooling now. the jar finished colonizing today. i've scoped the perfect little xmas tin to spawn it into. i figure the sub will colonize while the first jar consolidates, the first will get cased and they'll hit my shotgun at the same time. a pile of firsts for me to be logged in a new thread.
much love, shroomery. jj

Half pints of glass? 65 minutes should be good. In plastic? 45, maybe 50 to be sure. Of course that can vary based on PC size and stove type. A little more for bigger PCs or electric stoves.
For steam sterilizing, I wouldn't really know. I only steam sterilized PF substrate before going to the PC. Steaming glass jars of whole grains for 8 hours seems retarded to me when a tiny fraction of the time, energy, and water gives entirely assured results with a PC. But I'd guess 6 hours for half-pints of whole rice may do it...

Cool! Didn't know whole grain could be steam sterilized so shortly with success

I did think whole brown rice would take a lot less time than other whole grains. Cronicr was saying he was doing 8 or 9 hours steam sterilizing for quart jars of WBS. I figured half pints of rice would be much much less than that.
Thanks

so yeah, close this thread and never speak of it again. it worked great several times... on a small scale. but when scaled up for a few quarts of spawn plus a few plastic jars it was utterly useless, just didn't scale up viably, kinda like how wind and solar ain't solving our energy problems. ever. i'm sure it could still be made to work, but it won't be worth figuring out, not least because it's not any easier than a typical hydration method. so fuck it.
cheers,
jack
